Chapter 9 - The Public Reckoning

Eleanor stood frozen, staring at the gown, the sapphire, and the unmistakable look of absolute triumph in Julian’s eyes. She tried to muster her usual condescending sneer, but her lower lip was trembling.
""Julian..."" Eleanor stammered, frantically scanning the room as hundreds of guests and society reporters turned their smartphone cameras toward the stage. ""What is the meaning of this spectacle? This is a private charity foundation event. You can't just barge in here with... with her dressed in the family jewels without my permission!""
""Permission?"" Julian took a step forward, his eyes burning with cold fury. ""You forfeited the right to talk about permission the moment you decided to orchestrate an ambush against my future wife.""
A murmur of shock rippled through the ballroom. Socialites turned to each other with wide eyes, whispering behind champagne flutes.
""I have no idea what you're talking about,"" Eleanor hissed, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. ""You're humiliating yourself, Julian! Stop this madness right now!""
""Are you sure you don't know?"" Julian pulled a small remote from his pocket and pressed a button.
Above the grand stage, the massive digital presentation screen that had been displaying the charity’s sponsors flickered and changed. An audio waveform appeared, and through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art surround sound system, Eleanor’s own voice blasted out with pristine clarity:
“I want her crushed. I want her reminded that she is nothing more than an orphaned nurse who cleans vomit for a living. Humiliate her thoroughly enough, and she will realize she doesn't have the stomach to survive in our world. Do this properly, and the regional directorship of the Paris gallery is yours.”
The ballroom exploded into gasps, shouts, and horrified whispers. The society women who had been fawning over Eleanor minutes earlier scrambled backward as if she were radioactive.
Eleanor turned bright red, then ghostly pale. ""Turn it off! Turn that off right now! That’s an illegal recording! It's forged! It's a deepfake!""
""It was recorded on a corporate server owned by Hartwell Logistics,"" Julian said coldly. ""And Vanessa Cole has already signed a full sworn affidavit confirming every word of it in exchange for avoiding criminal conspiracy charges.""
Julian turned to face the entire assembly of Chicago’s high society.
""For three years,"" Julian announced, his voice carrying like thunder, ""my stepmother has claimed to represent the dignity and charity of the Hartwell name. Today, she used that influence to try and destroy a woman whose only crime was working a fourteen-hour night shift saving children with congenital heart defects. While Eleanor was buying six-figure emeralds, Naomi Bennett was performing emergency chest compressions on infant patients.""
The crowd stared at Naomi. Several older women were dabbing away tears. The social hierarchy of the room had shattered in an instant; the woman Eleanor had called 'gutter trash' was now standing before them as an undisputed hero.
Julian turned back to Eleanor, pulling an envelope from his jacket.
""Effective at midnight tonight, you are formally removed from the board of the Hartwell Charitable Foundation. Your access to the family trust allowances is revoked pursuant to the morals clause of my father’s will. The penthouse in Palm Beach is being listed for sale tomorrow morning, and your name is stricken from every asset associated with the Hartwell estate.""
Eleanor’s knees buckled. She reached out to grab the orchid arch to keep from collapsing. ""Julian... you can't do this to me! I was your father’s wife! You can't leave me with nothing!""
May you like
""You're not leaving with nothing,"" Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. ""You have your personal clothes, your jewelry, and whatever dignity you can salvage on your way out the service door. Security will escort you off the premises.""
Two private guards stepped forward, flanking Eleanor and firmly guiding the weeping, disgraced woman out of the ballroom through the kitchen corridor, away from the flashing cameras.
