Chapter 4 - The Inventory Audit

The older socialite on the couch suddenly dropped her phone. The glass screen shattered against the marble floor, but she didn't even bend down to pick it up. Her daughter sank back into the velvet cushions, looking as if she were about to pass out from sheer humiliation.

Vanessa felt the room spinning. ""F-Fiancée?"" she squeaked, the sound resembling a dying animal. ""Mr. Hartwell, there must be a catastrophic misunderstanding! The system... the appointment record only said 'Bennett'! It didn't carry the Hartwell family seal! She arrived in... in worn jeans and gym sneakers! She refused to disclose her background, and she tried to touch the archival Laurent Vance piece without gloves! I was only following standard salon security protocols to protect the brand!""

""Protect the brand?"" Arthur Bellamy suddenly stepped forward, his aging voice shaking with thunderous rage. ""Vanessa, you fool! You absolute, unmitigated idiot!""

""Mr. Bellamy, please—""

""Shut your mouth!"" the founder roared, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson. ""Do you have any idea who Mr. Hartwell is? The Hartwell Trust owns this entire commercial block! They own the ground lease beneath our foundation! They funded our Paris flagship expansion! When Julian Hartwell’s executive office called my personal cell phone three days ago to reserve private access for his bride-to-be, I personally authorized an unlimited credit line with zero restrictions!""

Tessa stepped out from behind the counter, her hands shaking, but her voice determined. ""I tried to tell her, Mr. Bellamy. The tablet clearly showed an executive override from the primary landlord account. Mrs. Cole refused to look at the screen. She told Miss Bennett that she looked like gutter trash and ordered me to bring a disinfectant cloth to wipe the sleeve because she said Miss Bennett's hands were filthy.""

Julian’s eyes narrowed until they looked like shards of gray glass. He looked back at Naomi’s hands—the soft, pale hands that had spent seven years stitching delicate infant arteries and soothing dying children in sterile wards.

""You said her hands were filthy?"" Julian asked Vanessa.

The silence was so heavy that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like an airplane engine.

Vanessa fell to her knees behind the desk, completely abandoning any trace of pride. Tears began streaming down her thick foundation, leaving muddy streaks along her jawline. ""Mr. Hartwell, I beg you! I didn't know! I swear on my life I didn't know! People come in here every week trying to scam us! I was stressed! I was trying to preserve the dignity of the boutique! Miss Bennett, please forgive me! You must understand how high-stress luxury retail can be!""

""You weren't stressed, Vanessa,"" Naomi said calmly, looking down at the kneeling manager without an ounce of pity. ""You enjoyed every single second of it. You enjoyed looking down on someone you thought had less money than you. You enjoyed humiliating a tired stranger just to prove your own fragile importance.""

Julian looked at Arthur Bellamy. ""Arthur.""

""Yes, Mr. Hartwell! Anything, please!"" the old man said desperately.

""I want her terminated immediately,"" Julian said cold-bloodedly. ""Not with a severance package. Terminated for gross misconduct, breach of client fiduciary duty, and civil defamation. I want her blacklisted from every luxury retail association, every department store, and every designer house in North America and Europe. If I ever find out she is hired as so much as a stockroom clerk in any retail establishment in this city, I will pull all Hartwell commercial leases from the parent corporation.""

""Consider it done right now,"" Arthur Bellamy said without hesitating a single second. ""Vanessa Cole, you are fired. Clear your personal locker immediately and get off these premises before I have the police arrest you for harassment.""

Vanessa sat on the floor, weeping hysterically, her hands clutching her designer suit that suddenly meant nothing at all.

Julian didn't look at her again. He turned his gaze toward the $300,000 gown.

""Tessa,"" Julian called out smoothly.

The young receptionist jumped. ""Y-Yes, Mr. Hartwell?""

""Bring the dress over here.""
