Chapter 7 - The Stepmother's Poison

Julian’s eyes darkened into twin pools of midnight.
Eleanor.
His father’s second wife, a former beauty queen with a razor-wire smile and an insatiable hunger for the family fortune. Ever since the old patriarch passed away three years ago, leaving eighty percent of the voting equity to Julian, Eleanor had waged a bitter, passive-aggressive cold war against him. She had tried to marry Julian off to every hollow oil heiress in Dallas and every political socialite in Manhattan, desperate to bring an ally into the family trust.
And then Julian had met Naomi in the emergency waiting room of St. Catherine's on the night his little cousin had suffered an acute asthma attack. Naomi had been covered in sweat, calm and commanding, saving the boy's life without ever asking who the terrified family was.
Julian had fallen in love with her in that exact hospital hallway.
Eleanor had been furious. To her, a girl without pedigree, without family connections, and without an inherited fortune was an insult to the Hartwell bloodline.
Julian walked out of the bedroom, closing the door silently behind him. He stepped into his wood-paneled study and sat behind his desk. ""Marcus. Bring me the phone records.""
""Already on your terminal, sir,"" Marcus replied. ""At twelve-fifteen today—forty-five minutes before Miss Bennett arrived at the salon—Vanessa Cole received a twelve-minute phone call from Mrs. Eleanor Hartwell's private estate in Palm Beach.""
Julian opened the file. The audio recording, captured by the automated surveillance system that monitored all Hartwell-affiliated corporate lines, played through the encrypted speakers.
“She’s coming in today, Vanessa,” Eleanor’s silky, aristocratic drawl echoed in the room. “My stepson gave her a blank check. She’s going to look at the Laurent Vance gown. I want her crushed. I want her reminded that she is nothing more than an orphaned nurse who cleans vomit for a living. Humiliate her thoroughly enough, and she will realize she doesn't have the stomach to survive in our world. Do this properly, and the regional directorship of the Paris gallery is yours.”
“Consider it done, Mrs. Hartwell,” Vanessa’s sycophantic voice replied. “I'll make sure she leaves in tears before she even touches the hem.”
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, a cold, terrifying smile touching his lips.
It hadn't been an accident. It hadn't been mere retail snobbery. It was a calculated ambush designed to break Naomi’s spirit and drive her away from the family.
""Marcus,"" Julian said softly.
""Sir?""
""Where is Eleanor right now?""
""She flew in from Florida this morning, sir. She is currently hosting her annual Autumn Charity Gala in the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel. Over four hundred members of the high society elite are attending. The press red carpet began thirty minutes ago.""
Julian looked down at his watch. Three-thirty in the afternoon.
""Has the Vance dress arrived from the boutique?""
May you like
""The courier just pulled into the loading dock, Mr. Hartwell. Preserved in museum-grade casing, accompanied by four bonded escorts.""
Julian stood up, adjusting his cuffs with lethal precision. ""Call the city’s top styling team. Tell them they have two hours to prepare the most breathtaking bridal unveiling this city has ever seen. We’re going to a charity gala.""
