Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Lake

The black Maybach glided silently along Lake Shore Drive, the gray waters of Lake Michigan churning beneath an overcast Chicago sky. Inside the climate-controlled cabin, Naomi leaned her head against Julian’s shoulder, watching the raindrops streak across the tinted window.
""You didn't have to ruin that family's business proposal, Julian,"" Naomi said softly, her fingers tracing the stitching on his tailored sleeve. ""The woman was rude, but her husband probably had nothing to do with it.""
Julian looked down at her, his jaw set in a hard, stubborn line. ""Her husband uses my money to finance his lifestyle, Naomi. If his wife believes she can publicly humiliate a pediatric nurse in the middle of Michigan Avenue and still enjoy the benefits of my financial backing, she is severely mistaken. People like that only learn when the consequences hit their bank accounts.""
Naomi sighed, closing her eyes. ""I just wanted an ordinary morning. I wanted to see if I could look like a real bride, just for a second. Without security, without people whispering about your net worth, without feeling like an imposter who sneaked into a palace.""
Julian’s hand moved to her chin, gently turning her face toward his. His gray eyes were intense, burning with an emotion so deep it made Naomi’s breath hitch.
""Listen to me,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a fierce whisper. ""You are not an imposter. You never were. You spent seven years sleeping on hospital cots, eating cold ramen, and pouring your soul into broken children while those women sat in country clubs gossiping about manicures. You have more courage, more dignity, and more beauty in your little finger than everyone in that salon combined. That dress wasn't three hundred thousand dollars because of the silk, Naomi. It was expensive because it was made for royalty. And as far as I'm concerned, you are the only queen in this city.""
Naomi felt a lump form in her throat. She buried her face into his neck, inhaling the familiar warmth of his skin. ""I'm just tired, Jules.""
""I know,"" he murmured, his arms wrapping tightly around her. ""Sleep. I’ve got you.""
By the time the car pulled into the private underground garage of the Lake Shore penthouse tower, Naomi was sound asleep. Julian didn't wake her. He stepped out of the vehicle, gathered her light frame into his arms, and carried her through the private elevator directly up to the sixty-fourth floor.
Marcus, his head of security, stepped out into the foyer with an encrypted tablet in hand. ""Sir, the news from the salon is already spreading. Several clients took covert videos of the confrontation before you arrived. Someone posted a clip on TikTok showing Vanessa Cole ordering the guards to cuff Miss Bennett.""
Julian carried Naomi toward the master bedroom, keeping his voice dangerously low. ""Did her face show clearly in the video?""
""Yes, sir. But the narrative online is shifting fast. People recognized Miss Bennett from the St. Catherine’s pediatric gala last year. The comments are furious at Bellamy Atelier.""
""Good,"" Julian said cold-bloodedly. ""Let them tear the boutique to shreds. But monitor the feeds. If anyone posts anything defamatory about Naomi, scrub it from the internet and serve them with a federal cease-and-desist within twenty minutes.""
""Understood, sir.""
Julian laid Naomi down on the king-sized bed, carefully slipping off her worn white sneakers and pulling the heavy goose-down duvet up to her chin. She stirred slightly, murmuring something unintelligible, before curling onto her side and sinking deeper into sleep.
Julian stood by the window for a long time, looking out over the misty expanse of the lake. He tapped his earpiece.
""Marcus.""
""Yes, Mr. Hartwell?""
""Find out who Vanessa Cole’s patrons were. I want to know who sponsored her appointment as general director of that boutique. Nobody acts with that level of untouchable arrogance without backing from someone in our circle.""
There was a brief pause on the line. Then Marcus cleared his throat. ""Sir... we already ran the audit. Vanessa Cole’s executive sponsor wasn't Arthur Bellamy.""
May you like
""Then who was it?""
""It was your stepmother, Eleanor Hartwell.""
