Chapter 2 - The Red Security Light

Instead of running, Naomi stepped backward, maintaining complete composure. She pulled her phone from her navy jacket pocket and unlocked the screen. ""You don't need to call the police, Mrs. Cole. I will gladly wait right here until the matter of this appointment is settled.""
Vanessa’s expression twisted into pure venom. She walked directly to the reception desk, shoved Tessa aside, and slammed her palm down on the red emergency security button mounted beneath the counter. A dull, rhythmic chime echoed through the high ceilings. Across the polished travertine hallway, the heavy glass doors of the boutique slid shut with a pneumatic hiss, their magnetic locks engaging with a heavy clack.
""What are you doing?"" Tessa asked, her face suddenly turning white. ""Mrs. Cole, that button calls the building’s armed security team. It triggers a protocol lockdown!""
""She refused to vacate private commercial premises after being formally trespassed,"" Vanessa said, her voice brimming with triumphant malice. ""She threatened boutique personnel, demanded access to a high-value uninsured artifact, and attempted to touch an unpurchased three-hundred-thousand-dollar museum-grade gown. That makes it attempted grand larceny under Illinois retail defense laws.""
Naomi looked at the closed doors, then back at Vanessa. ""You are completely delusional.""
""I am protecting my inventory from gutter trash,"" Vanessa spat.
The two socialite clients on the couch stood up, gathering their designer handbags with thrilled murmurs of scandal. The older woman took out her diamond-encrusted smartphone and pointed the camera lens directly at Naomi’s face. ""Don't move, darling. The police will want a clear facial recognition photo for the booking report. Imagine having the nerve to try and steal a Laurent Vance original in broad daylight!""
""Put that phone away,"" Naomi said coldly, her medical authority bleeding into her tone. ""I haven't stolen anything. I have a legitimate booking under the name Bennett.""
""Oh, save the pathetic tears for the judge,"" the mother sneered, stepping closer. ""My husband sits on the board of the Chicago Cultural Institute. We know everyone who matters in this city. Nobody named Bennett has three hundred thousand dollars to blow on wedding silk unless your father is running a scam ring out of a strip mall.""
At that moment, the elevator doors at the end of the private corridor dinged open. Two burly men in charcoal tactical suits with gold security badges pinned to their vests stepped into the salon. Their expressions were stern, their eyes darting around the boutique before locking onto Vanessa.
""What’s the situation, Mrs. Cole?"" the lead guard asked, resting a gloved hand casually near his side holster. ""We got an active grand theft alarm from your register.""
Vanessa pointed a rigid, manicured finger straight at Naomi. ""That woman over there. She forced her way through the reception desk without authorization. She physically touched the Vance gown, attempted to damage the beading, and when I asked her to leave, she became verbally aggressive and threatened the boutique staff. She is refusing to vacate. Remove her, cuff her, and take her down to the security detention holding in the basement until the precinct officers arrive.""
The lead guard frowned, stepping toward Naomi. He looked at her worn sneakers, her oversized gray sweater, and the dark circles under her eyes. ""Ma'am, keep your hands where we can see them. Did you have an invitation to this boutique?""
""I had a verified private appointment,"" Naomi said calmly, not flinching as the guard loomed over her. ""The staff refused to honor it because they dislike my clothes. Check the tablet on the counter. The appointment is under Bennett.""
The guard glanced back at Vanessa. Vanessa sneered. ""The tablet was tampered with, Officer Miller. I know my VIP roster. There is no Bennett on the Gold Circle patron list. She is a fraud attempting an insurance scam or a social media stunt. Do your job before I report your company to building management for gross negligence!""
Officer Miller looked torn, but Vanessa’s status as the top-grossing tenant in the skyscraper carried immense weight. He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. ""I'm sorry, miss. You need to come with us right now. You can explain your appointment to the police.""
""If you put those handcuffs on me,"" Naomi said, her voice dropping into a quiet, chilling register that made both guards hesitate, ""the man paying your building's master lease will personally see to it that neither of you ever works security in this state again.""
Vanessa burst out laughing, clapping her hands together with cruel delight. ""Listen to her! She thinks she’s married to an oligarch! Cuff her, Miller! Drag her out of here before she touches another piece of silk!""

Miller stepped forward, reaching for Naomi’s wrist.
At that exact second, the heavy magnetic locks on the front glass doors gave a violent metallic shudder. A sharp, override beep split the air, followed by the terrifying sound of the reinforced security bolts snapping completely open under external force.
