Chapter 5 - The Velvet Cloak

Tessa hurried forward, her eyes wide with reverence. She carefully unhooked the ivory silk masterpiece from its secure velvet stand, carrying the delicate creation with breathtaking care across the marble floor.
The gown truly was a work of art. The morning light filtering through the tall glass windows caught the thousands of hand-sewn micro-pearls, making the fabric shimmer like a frozen lake under the winter sun. It was understated, regal, and undeniably pure.
Julian looked down at Naomi. His hard expression softened into something profound and tender. ""Is this the one you liked, Naomi?""
Naomi reached out again. This time, there was nobody to stop her. Her fingertips brushed the silk, feeling the incredible texture of the antique French embroidery. ""It doesn't boast,"" she murmured softly. ""It doesn't scream for people to stare at it. It just stands there, quiet and strong. It reminds me of the snow outside the children’s ward on Christmas morning.""
Julian’s chest tightened. He loved her for a million reasons, but none more than this: she was completely untouched by vanity. In a world full of heiresses and corporate opportunists who treated marriage as a strategic merger, Naomi Bennett saw life through the lens of human survival, kindness, and quiet grace.
""Pack the dress,"" Julian told Arthur Bellamy.
Arthur blinked, caught off guard. ""P-Pack it, sir? Would Miss Bennett not like to try it on in the presidential suite? We have seamstresses on standby—""
""No,"" Julian interrupted. ""My fiancée has been awake for over twenty hours saving lives. She isn't going to stand on a pedestal for an hour while your tailors poke her with pins. Wrap it in preservation silk and have it delivered by private courier to our penthouse on Lake Shore Drive this evening. Our personal tailor will handle the final fittings in our home.""
Arthur bowed his head deeply. ""Immediately, Mr. Hartwell. The invoice will be waived as a personal apology from the Bellamy family—""
""You will charge my account the full three hundred thousand dollars,"" Julian said coldly. ""I pay for what my wife wears. But you will donate every single penny of that profit directly to the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Fund at St. Catherine's Children's Hospital in Naomi Bennett's name. If I don't see the verified tax receipt by five o'clock today, your lease renewal is canceled.""
Arthur’s eyes widened with profound relief. ""Yes, sir! Of course! An extraordinary gesture, truly! It will be transferred within the hour!""
Julian then turned slowly toward the two socialites frozen on the sofa. The mother was trembling so violently that her lynx fur shook against her shoulders. Her daughter was staring at the floor, clutching her broken phone like a lifeline.
""Mrs. Van Der Bilt, isn't it?"" Julian asked, his voice smooth and lethally polite.
The woman swallowed hard, her throat dry. ""M-Mr. Hartwell... I... we were just admiring the decor... we had no idea—""
""Your husband runs Van Der Bilt Capital, correct?"" Julian continued, tilting his head slightly. ""The firm currently seeking an eighty-million-dollar syndicated loan from the Hartwell Private Equity Group for the new logistics hub in Indianapolis?""
The woman turned completely white. She looked like she was about to vomit. ""Julian... please. It was just a misunderstanding. We didn't say anything bad! We were just surprised—""
""My executive board convenes tomorrow morning at eight,"" Julian said quietly. ""I will ensure your husband’s funding proposal is rejected without review. Tell him to thank his wife and daughter for their delightful hospitality.""
The woman let out a strangled wail, collapsing back onto the sofa in absolute despair.

Julian didn't wait to hear another word. He slipped his heavy, charcoal cashmere coat off his shoulders and draped it gently over Naomi’s frame. The coat swallowed her small frame, wrapping her in his familiar warmth and the clean scent of cedar and bergamot.
""Come on, Dr. Bennett,"" Julian whispered, wrapping his strong arm around her waist. ""Let’s get you some pancakes and put you to bed.""
