Chapter 8 - The Emergency Wing

The flashing red and blue sirens of the police escort cleared the midnight traffic across the Queensboro Bridge, cutting the travel time down to nine breathless minutes. Inside the armored SUV, Adrian held Emily close, brushing damp strands of hair from her forehead while she breathed through intensifying contractions.

“Stay with me, darling,” Adrian murmured, his voice breaking with an intimacy he had never allowed himself to feel. “You’re doing so well. Just look at me. Squeeze my hand.”

Emily crushed his fingers with surprising strength, crying out as another spasm gripped her body. “I’m scared, Adrian. What if she’s too small? What if something happens to her?”

“She has your blood, Emily,” Adrian whispered, kissing her temple fiercely. “She’s the strongest fighter in this world. And so are you. I won't let anything happen to either of you. I swear it.”

The vehicle screeched to a halt at the emergency bay of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. The double doors flew open, and a team of trauma nurses and obstetric specialists swarmed the car with a gurney. Dr. Miller was already waiting in surgical scrubs, having rushed from her home after Adrian’s call.

“Contractions are ninety seconds apart,” Dr. Miller assessed rapidly as they wheeled Emily down the brightly lit corridor. “Her cervix is dilated to eight centimeters. The baby is in breech position, and the umbilical cord is showing signs of compression. We have to perform an immediate emergency cesarean section!”

“I’m going with her,” Adrian stated, his tone brooking no argument.

“Get him scrubbed!” Dr. Miller yelled to a nurse.

Inside the sterile, blinding-white operating room, Emily lay strapped to the table, shivering uncontrollably as the surgical drape was raised between her chest and her abdomen. Monitors beeped frantically in the background. The harsh smell of antiseptic filled the air. She felt utterly terrified, cold, and alone—until a warm, gloved hand gripped hers.

She looked up to find Adrian standing beside her head, dressed in surgical scrubs and a mask, his dark eyes locked onto hers with unwavering, fierce devotion.

“I’m right here,” he promised, his thumb soothing the back of her hand. “I’m not leaving your side.”

“Adrian... promise me,” Emily wept, her voice trembling beneath the oxygen mask. “If something goes wrong... save her. Save our daughter first.”

Adrian leaned down until his forehead touched hers, his voice thick with unsphed tears. “Nothing is going wrong. You hear me? We started this nightmare together, and we are walking out of here as a family. Don’t you dare give up on me, Emily Bennett.”

The surgical team worked with lightning speed. Emily felt tugging, pressure, and the distant murmur of medical jargon. The seconds stretched into eternity.

Then, suddenly, the sharp, miraculous cry of a newborn baby shattered the sterile room.
