Chapter 3 - The Broken Contract

The examination room felt as if all oxygen had been vacuumed out into the street. Emily felt her head spin, clutching the edge of the mattress to keep from tumbling onto the floor.

“Me?” she whispered, her voice trembling violently. “No... no, that’s impossible. I signed paperwork as a gestational carrier. I was told my own eggs were untouched... they put me under anesthesia for the transfer...”

Adrian turned slowly toward Marco, his voice dropping into a deadly, lethal whisper. “Bring the director of the fertility clinic to my office within the hour. If he doesn’t want to walk, drag him.”

“Right away, boss,” Marco barked into his earpiece, slipping through the door.

Adrian stepped beside Emily, placing both hands gently on her trembling shoulders. “Breathe, Emily. Look at me. Breathe.”

“How could this happen?” Emily cried, her chest heaving as tears spilled over her cheeks. “Richard told me I had no rights! He said I was just an incubator, a hired belly with zero connection to this child! He made me feel like garbage for seven months because I loved her! And all this time... she’s mine? She’s really mine?”

“She is yours,” Adrian said, his voice raw with sudden, unyielding emotion. He pulled her gently against his chest, uncaring that the ultrasound gel smeared across his immaculate designer shirt. Emily buried her face into his shoulder, sobbing from the crushing weight of relief, betrayal, and awe.

For months, she had fought against her own maternal instincts, beating herself up for feeling a mother’s fierce devotion toward a baby she was contracted to surrender. She had cried herself to sleep counting down the days until she would have to hand over this sweet soul and disappear into poverty. But biology had tied them together from the very beginning.

“Adrian,” she gasped against his collarbone. “Did you know? Did you plan this to trap me?”

Adrian pulled back, his dark eyes burning with absolute sincerity. “On my brother’s grave, Emily, I swear to you: I knew nothing. When I decided to have an heir, I wanted a clean slate. I used Hale to handle the clinical arrangements because I didn’t want emotional entanglements. Hale knew that. Which means someone paid him to switch the donor files and use your genetics.”

“Why would anyone want my baby to be mine?”

“Because under New York law, a gestational surrogate has limited standing against a biological father,” Adrian explained grimly, wiping the tears from her cheeks with the pad of his thumb. “But a biological mother cannot be stripped of custody without an extensive, public legal war. If my rivals wanted to destroy me, paralyzing me in a vicious, public custody trial while blackmailing the mother is the perfect weapon.”

Emily’s stomach plummeted. “Your enemies wanted to use me to hurt you.”

“Yes,” Adrian said, his jaw tightening like forged steel. “Hale was setting you up to flee with the child, or accuse me of human trafficking the moment she was born. He wanted to strip my assets and ruin my legitimacy before the board of directors.” Adrian leaned down, his eyes boring into hers. “He thought you were just a weak, penniless waitress who would break under pressure. He didn't know you. And he didn't count on one thing.”

“What?” Emily asked through her tears.

“He didn't count on me protecting you with my life,” Adrian answered softly. “Come. We’re going home. No one touches you or my daughter ever again.”
