Chapter 6 - The Lion’s Den

The Moretti estate on Long Island was a massive stone fortress surrounded by dark pine forests and high iron gates. Rain lashed against the armored windows of Adrian’s town car as they approached the private entrance.
Emily had refused to stay behind at the penthouse. “If this council is voting on my daughter’s future, I am sitting in that room,” she had insisted, her Brooklyn stubbornness flaring bright. Adrian had looked at her with fierce pride, dressing her in a tailored emerald gown that framed her pregnancy with regal elegance, accompanied by four of his elite bodyguards.
The grand dining hall was lined with antique chandeliers and dozens of high-ranking family capos, financiers, and board members. At the head of the long oak table sat Vincent Moretti, seventy years old, with slicked-back silver hair and the eyes of a hungry reptile.
“Adrian!” Vincent greeted him with an expansive, theatrical smile as the heavy double doors opened. “We were beginning to think you had abandoned your family obligations. And you brought your... surrogate.”
Whispers rippled through the gathered men. Emily held her head high, her spine straight as steel, refusing to show a single tremor of fear. She rested her hand over her pregnant stomach, stepping into the center of the room beside Adrian.
“She isn't a surrogate, Vincent,” Adrian’s voice sliced through the tension like a razor. “Her name is Emily Bennett. And the child she carries is my legitimate daughter and the sole legal heir to the entire Moretti estate.”
Vincent chuckled darkly, leaning back in his leather chair. “An heir born of an anonymous donor and a common waitress? The council charter forbids illegitimate claims, nephew. Under the family constitution, if you cannot produce a sanctioned bloodline, the stewardship falls to the senior council.”
“That would be convenient for you, wouldn't it?” Adrian said smoothly, signaling Marco.
Marco stepped forward and dropped a heavy leather folder onto the table, right in front of Vincent. The documents spilled out: bank transfer statements, offshore account logs, wiretaps, and Richard Hale’s signed federal confession.
Vincent’s smile vanished instantly. His pale eyes flicked down at the papers, and the color drained from his wrinkled skin.
“You paid Hale two million dollars to forge my signature,” Adrian announced to the silent room, his voice echoing off the high stone arches. “You bribed the laboratory staff to alter the genetic records, intending to abduct Emily to an unregistered upstate cabin, force an emergency delivery, and eliminate her so you could control the baby as your puppet.”
Outraged murmurs broke out among the council members. Even within their ruthless world, targeting a pregnant woman and an unborn child was considered the ultimate violation of honor.
“These are lies!” Vincent shouted, slamming his palm on the table, rising to his feet. “Fabricated nonsense from a rogue attorney!”
“Check your phone, Uncle,” Adrian said quietly.
Vincent’s phone buzzed violently on the table. He snatched it up, his eyes bulging as he read the incoming notifications.
“Every bank account associated with your shell corporations has been frozen by federal marshals,” Adrian continued with chilling calm. “Your private security firm was disarmed twenty minutes ago. You have no money, no leverage, and no allies left in this room. You are stripped of your title, your shares, and your surname.”
Vincent looked around the room in desperation, but every single capo turned their back on him. Cornered and humiliated, the old man’s face twisted in blind, venomous fury.

“You think you’ve won?” Vincent hissed, his hand darting inside his tailored coat. “You destroyed my brother, and you won't destroy me!”
A silver snub-nosed revolver gleamed beneath the chandelier light as Vincent pulled it from his jacket, aiming straight at Adrian’s chest.
