Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ultrasound

The private maternal clinic on the Upper East Side was silent and secure when their armored convoy pulled into the underground bay the following morning. Marco walked two steps ahead, checking every corridor with his hand resting unobtrusively beneath his jacket, while Adrian stayed glued to Emily’s side, his hand lightly resting on the small of her back. The touch sent comforting waves through her aching spine.

Dr. Miller, a distinguished obstetrician who had handled the city's most elite pregnancies, welcomed them into the examination room with an anxious expression.

“Mr. Moretti, I am deeply relieved you called last night,” Dr. Miller said, adjusting her glasses as Emily settled onto the padded leather table. “Richard Hale arrived here yesterday morning presenting official legal power of attorney, demanding all original files, donor background paperwork, and an immediate transfer of Miss Bennett to a secluded facility in upstate New York.”

Emily’s fingers tightened on the edge of the examination paper. “A secluded facility? Why would he do that?”

“He told us Adrian had signed off on full institutionalization to prevent leaks to the press,” Dr. Miller explained, applying cool blue gel across Emily’s abdomen. “When I refused without direct verbal confirmation from Mr. Moretti, he threatened my license.”

Adrian’s jaw set into stone. “Hale didn’t act alone. He doesn’t possess the courage to steal an empire’s heir unless he has a buyer backed by real firepower.”

The hum of the ultrasound machine filled the quiet room. On the high-definition monitor, the grayscale image flickered, and suddenly, the rhythmic, thunderous gallop of a fetal heartbeat echoed through the speakers.

Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.

The tension in the room instantly vanished. Emily closed her eyes, letting tears slide into her hairline. Every fear, every dollar sign, every terrifying contract faded into the background against that stubborn, beating heart.

Adrian stepped directly to the screen, his dark eyes wide and captivated. He didn’t look away for a single second as the doctor traced the baby’s profile—the curve of her forehead, the tiny button nose, the delicate fingers curled into tiny fists.

“She weighs approximately three pounds and eight ounces,” Dr. Miller announced with a warm smile. “Growth parameters are in the eighty-fifth percentile. Emily, your placenta is healthy, amniotic fluid is perfect. She is thriving beautifully.”

“Look at her hands,” Adrian murmured, mesmerized. He reached down and instinctively wrapped his fingers around Emily’s hand. His grip was warm, grounded, and fiercely protective. “She’s beautiful, Emily.”

“She has your stubborn chin,” Emily whispered back, sniffing back her tears.

Dr. Miller typed a few notes, then turned the screen slightly. “I took blood panels as requested by the legal amendment last week to confirm donor antibody match. The results came in an hour ago.”

Adrian frowned. “What donor antibody match? The IVF was completed seven months ago.”

Dr. Miller looked puzzled, pulling up a laboratory document. “Mr. Moretti... your original surrogacy contract stated the egg donor was anonymous profile #4088 from the Zurich registry. But the laboratory sequencing attached to Hale's subpoena shows something completely different. There was no Swiss donor.”

Emily sat up quickly, ignoring the cold gel on her stomach. “What are you talking about?”

“The laboratory files indicate that the embryo implanted into Emily Bennett was not from an anonymous European donor,” Dr. Miller said quietly. “Miss Bennett, the clinic used your natural ovulation cycle during the prep phase. The genetic mother listed on this secondary file... is you.”
