Chapter 4 - The Scent of Treason

The penthouse fortress was placed on complete lockdown by evening. Armed sentries stood watch at every private elevator shaft, and the lower perimeter of the building was secured by Moretti security details. Yet inside the quiet walls of the sixty-fifth floor, the atmosphere had shifted into a fragile, domestic haven.
Emily sat on the plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a cashmere throw, sipping warm broth that Adrian had personally brought to her. She watched him pace back and forth across the mahogany study, barking rapid-fire directives into his encrypted satellite phone.
“Trace the shell company registered in Grand Cayman,” Adrian commanded. “Hale didn't move two million dollars through domestic accounts without an international clearance code. Find the banking signature. Now.”
He snapped the phone shut and pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling a long, exhausted breath. Emily watched the play of shadows across his chiseled face. For all his ruthless reputation, she had never seen a man work so tirelessly to shield someone else.
“You haven’t sat down in six hours,” she said softly.
Adrian looked up, his fierce demeanor softening the second his eyes met hers. “I can’t sit down while the snake who tried to steal my daughter is still breathing fresh air.”
“Adrian... she’s your daughter, but now she’s my daughter too,” Emily said, adjusting her posture to ease the swelling in her ankles. “What happens when this is over? What happens when she’s born?”
The room fell into a heavy silence. Adrian walked over and sat on the low coffee table across from her, his knees nearly touching hers. The distance between them had completely dissolved over the last twenty-four hours.
“Do you want to leave?” Adrian asked, his voice unexpectedly quiet, tinged with a deep, hidden dread. “Do you want to take your settlement, file for custody, and run as far away from the Moretti name as you can?”
Emily looked into his eyes. Seven months ago, she would have sprinted toward the door. But now, she saw the boy who had buried his murdered brother, the man who carried the weight of an empire alone, the father who had looked at an ultrasound monitor with tears of pure devotion.
“I was terrified of you at first,” she admitted honestly. “Everyone said you were a monster who crushed people underfoot. But the man who protected my mother’s medical treatment, the man who sat up eating eggs with me at midnight, the man who wept when he saw her little heartbeat... that man isn't a monster. I don't want to run from you, Adrian. But I won't be treated like an invisible ghost in my daughter's life.”
Adrian reached out and gently cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing over her soft skin. His touch was electric, sending a shiver directly to her core. “You could never be a ghost to me, Emily. You’re the only thing in this whole damn city that feels real.”
Before she could process his words, the study doors burst open. Marco stood framed in the threshold, his face pale and grim.
“Boss, we caught Hale trying to cross the Canadian border near Plattsburgh. He’s in custody.”
Adrian rose instantly, the lethal darkness returning to his eyes like a rising storm. “Did he talk?”
“He sang like a canary the second we mentioned federal prison,” Marco answered, glancing nervously toward Emily. “It wasn't just corporate rivals paying him, Adrian. The contract, the switched IVF files, the upstate abduction plot... it was funded by family.”

Adrian went completely still. “Who?”
“Vincent,” Marco said quietly. “Your uncle Vincent.”
