Chapter 8 - The Rebuilding
Word of my appointment spread through the maritime and financial sectors like wildfire. The headlines shifted from the trivial drama of a social media influencer to the monumental ascension of a young woman taking the reins of one of the world's largest logistics empires.
In the days leading up to the gala, the atmosphere aboard the Étoile transformed. The torn dress was packed away in an archive box—a humble reminder of the night that tested my resolve. In its place, the legendary Italian fashion house Valentino rushed a bespoke, hand-embroidered gown of midnight-blue velvet, stitched with subtle silver constellations that mirrored the night sky above Monaco.
Captain Laurent oversaw the ship’s preparations with immaculate precision. The crew walked with renewed pride, knowing that their young patron had stood up for them and refused to let high-society parasites treat the vessel like their playground.
"Mademoiselle," Adrien said as I inspected the bridge two days before the event. "The crew asked me to give you this."
He handed me a small wooden box lined with blue velvet. Inside rested a polished silver nautical compass, engraved with the words: To our Captain, Elena Marlowe.
A lump formed in my throat as I touched the cold, beautifully crafted silver. "Adrien... this is too much."

"It is a tradition for every Marlowe who takes the helm," Adrien said with a warm, respectful smile. "Your grandfather carried one across the Atlantic. Your father carried one through the Pacific. And now, you carry this one wherever you choose to lead us. The entire crew stands behind you, Elena."
Looking at the weathered faces of the deckhands, the engineers, and the navigators who had dedicated their lives to our family's ships, I realized the profound difference between Cassandra Vale’s hollow world and mine. She measured her worth in temporary digital applause from strangers who forgot her the moment she fell. I measured mine in the quiet loyalty of people who would brave a hurricane by my side.
