Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession

The deck phone mounted near the helm station began to ring with a sharp, insistent chime. Captain Laurent took three brisk paces, lifted the receiver, and listened for five seconds before turning to face the upper deck. He hit the speaker toggle, allowing a deep, resonant voice to boom over the outdoor audio system.

"Elena, my darling," the voice of Arthur Marlowe echoed across the deck, crisp, commanding, and chillingly calm.

Every person on that yacht straightened their posture immediately. Arthur Marlowe was a legend who rarely appeared in public, a man whose handshakes shaped international trade treaties and whose disfavor spelled financial ruin.

"I am watching the live feed from my study in Zurich," my father said, the faint clinking of his fountain pen audible through the satellite connection. "The modern internet is quite efficient. Julian, have you secured the raw broadcast footage?"

"Yes, Mr. Marlowe," Julian answered into the small lapel microphone pinned to his tie. "The entire interaction, from Miss Vale pouring the vintage champagne to the deliberate tearing of Elena's couture silk, has been recorded in high-definition from five deck security angles, in addition to her own public livestream."

"Excellent," Arthur Marlowe replied. "Miss Vale, can you hear me?"

Cassandra dropped her phone onto the teak deck. The glass screen cracked with a sharp snap. "Mr. Marlowe... please. It was an accident! I was overwhelmed! Your daughter was rude to me—"

"Do not insult my intelligence by speaking to me," Arthur interrupted, his tone devoid of any anger, which made it ten times more terrifying. "My daughter has shown remarkable restraint tonight. Had someone treated me with such barbarism forty years ago, they would already be swimming back to the harbor. You came aboard my vessel with malice, you assaulted my flesh and blood, and you used public humiliation as a weapon."

The line fell silent for a heartbeat. You could hear the faint sigh of the ocean swells against the hull.

"As of three minutes ago," Arthur stated coldly, "the maritime liens against your family's remaining domestic assets have been fully executed. The United States Marshals have arrived at your parents' penthouse in Tribeca. Your father has been taken into custody. And as for you, young lady, you will find that the fashion brands paying your endorsement fees will issue their termination notices before sunrise."

Cassandra’s knees gave out entirely. She slid down against the brass railing, collapsing in a heap of silver sequins and ruined pride. The young men who had laughed alongside her twenty minutes ago looked away, pretending they had never seen her before in their lives.
