Chapter 3 - The Truth Behind the Invitation

"You have two million purchased bots, Miss Vale," Julian corrected her coldly, handing a glossy dossier directly to me. "And by midnight, your follower count will be the least of your concerns."

I opened the folder while Adrien signaled two crew members. A stewardess named Marie hurried over, draping a warm, plush cashmere coat over my trembling shoulders. The warmth was immediate, chasing away the Mediterranean chill, but the cold fury inside my chest only hardened. I flipped through the private investigator notes Julian had assembled weeks ago.

This confrontation was never an accident. Cassandra hadn't simply lashed out because I walked through her photograph. She had been hunting me.

"You knew exactly who I was before you stepped foot onto the gangway, didn't you, Cassandra?" I asked quietly, looking over the top of the file into her wide, panicked eyes.

The silence that fell over the deck was suffocating. The other elite guests leaned forward, desperate to catch every whisper.

"I... I have no idea what you're talking about," she stammered, though her lower lip began to tremble.

"Three months ago, your father’s boutique investment firm in Manhattan collapsed," I said, my voice carrying clearly over the gentle hum of the yacht’s engines. "He misappropriated forty million dollars of client retirement capital into fraudulent offshore shipping ventures. ventures owned, ironically, by dummy corporations using my father’s trademark without permission."

Cassandra flinched as if struck by a whip.

"Your father is facing twenty-five years in federal prison," I continued, turning another page. "Unless someone with maritime authority withdrew the civil complaints filed in the Southern District of New York. You figured out that I was spending two weeks in Monaco to oversee the yacht's renovations. You thought if you could engineer an embarrassing scene, catch me on video reacting poorly, you could blackmail the Marlowe family into settling your father's debt to protect our public image."

The crowd erupted into furious murmurs. The high-society guests who had chuckled at my wet dress moments earlier were now staring at Cassandra with undisguised disgust. In their world, wealth and arrogance were tolerated, but clumsy extortion was the ultimate sin.

"You wanted to show the world an heiress throwing a violent tantrum on camera," I said, stepping closer to her, wrapping the coat tightly around my ruined dress. "You wanted to provoke me into slapping you so you could play the innocent victim of elite cruelty. But you made one fundamental mistake, Cassandra."

She pressed herself harder against the railing, tears finally breaking through her heavy mascara, leaving dark, ugly streaks down her contoured cheeks. "What mistake?" she whimpered.

"You assumed that having power means losing your temper," I whispered. "My father taught me that true power is knowing you can destroy someone with a whisper, and choosing the exact moment to let them destroy themselves instead."
