Chapter 9 - The Final Collapse

While Eleanor was settling into her dream home, Melissa’s manufactured world collapsed with horrifying speed.

Without David's income to maintain the facade, Melissa’s parents lost their luxury home to foreclosure, moving into a cramped two-bedroom rental outside Worcester. Julian, having burned every bridge with David, was forced to take a minimum-wage job at a car wash to pay off his mounting debts.

Desperate to save her influencer career, Melissa posted a tearful, highly edited video on her social media channels, claiming she was the victim of a sudden, cruel divorce by an unsupportive husband.

However, her scheme backfired catastrophically. The professional photographer she had hired for Thanksgiving dinner—disgusted by how Melissa had treated Eleanor in the hallway—leaked an unedited audio recording of the incident online.

Melissa’s exact, venomous words echoed across millions of screens worldwide: "Your place is in the kitchen. I don't want you ruining our family pictures. You don't fit the look I'm going for."

The internet’s reaction was instantaneous and merciless. Within forty-eight hours, the video gained over twenty million views, accompanied by the trending hashtag #JusticeForEleanor.

Every single brand partnership and sponsorship Melissa had spent years cultivating dropped her within hours. Fashion labels canceled their contracts, beauty brands publicly severed ties, and her follower count plummeted from eight hundred thousand to zero as she was forced to delete her accounts to escape public outrage.

One rainy afternoon in January, Melissa waited outside the Massachusetts General Hospital, shivering under a cheap umbrella until she spotted David walking toward his car after a twelve-hour surgical shift.

"David! Please, just two minutes!" she cried, lunging forward with hollow eyes and greasy hair tucked beneath a knitted cap. "They destroyed me online! I have no money, no sponsors, and nobody will hire me! Please tell them it was a misunderstanding!"

David stopped, looking at her not with anger, but with profound, detached pity.

"You reap what you sow, Melissa," David said quietly. "You valued an aesthetic photograph over a human soul. You treated the woman who gave me life like garbage, and now the world sees you for what you truly are."

"I have nothing left, David!" she sobbed, sinking onto the wet pavement just as she had in his kitchen weeks before.

"You have exactly what you gave my mother," David replied, opening his car door. "A cold seat in the corner, all by yourself."
