Chapter 1 - The Chilling Question

The silence in the grand dining room was so absolute you could hear the gold-painted candles flickering against the floral centerpieces. Melissa’s silver fork hit her porcelain plate with a piercing clang that made her wealthy parents jump in their seats.
David stood rigidly in the kitchen threshold, still wearing his dark blue hospital scrubs, his stethoscope hanging limp against his chest. His gaze drifted slowly from his mother’s trembling, flour-dusted hands back to the crowded dining room filled with Melissa's impeccably dressed relatives.
"David, honey, you're making a scene," Melissa whispered, forcing a high-pitched, nervous laugh that died instantly in the icy air. "Eleanor said she had a headache and wanted to sit in the quiet for a few minutes. Didn't you, Eleanor?"
Eleanor didn't answer. She kept her chin lowered, her frail fingers clutching the hem of her worn gray cardigan as tears silently traced the deep lines of her face.
David walked slowly toward the head of the table, his heavy work boots squeaking against the polished hardwood. Every single guest—Melissa’s snobbish mother Evelyn, her pretentious brother Julian, and their distant cousins—froze like statues.
"Don't lie to me, Melissa," David said, his voice deadly low and terrifyingly calm. "My mother has had arthritis for ten years, yet she spent the last forty-eight hours on her feet so your family could enjoy a feast. She hasn't missed a Thanksgiving seat beside me since I was six."
Evelyn, Melissa's mother, adjusted her diamond necklace and cleared her throat with an air of superior irritation. "Really, David, lower your voice. Melissa worked tirelessly coordinating the floral arrangements and hiring the photographer so we could have timeless family portraits."
David whipped his head around, his eyes locking onto his mother-in-law with an intensity that made the older woman shrink back into her leather dining chair.
"My mother peeled thirty pounds of potatoes by hand," David growled, pointing a trembling finger toward the golden carving platter. "She roasted the thirty-pound heritage turkey you are currently chewing on. She made the pies, the stuffing, the cranberry relish, and the rolls from scratch."
He turned back to Melissa, whose face had completely drained of color, her manicured fingers trembling against her silk dress.

"And you put her in the kitchen like hired help because her cardigan didn't match your Instagram aesthetic?" David's voice finally cracked, vibrating with pure, unadulterated fury. "Answer me, Melissa!"
"David, it was just for the photos!" Melissa blurted out, her polished mask cracking completely as several guests exchanged horrified glances. "I was going to call her back in after the photographer finished the dessert reel! You know how important my brand partnerships are!"
