Chapter 6 - The Con Exposed

The dirty truth spilled out like poison from a cracked vial. For two years, Melissa’s aristocratic family had been drowning in unpaid luxury loans, credit card defaults, and pending bank seizures.
Her father’s real estate firm had gone bankrupt eighteen months earlier, a humiliating secret they had hidden behind rental designer clothes, leased sports cars, and Melissa’s polished social media presence. Their plan all along was to use Melissa’s marriage to David as an endless financial safety net.
"They lost everything, David!" Melissa sobbed, sinking to her knees on the scattered divorce papers. "The bank is taking their house next month! That's why I needed my social media brand to explode! I needed the sponsorships to pay off their debts!"
"So you used my mother as an unpaid kitchen servant while you paraded your bankrupt family as high society?" David whispered, the depth of her deceit sickening him to his core. "You made Eleanor feel like dirt under your feet so you could maintain a fraudulent lie for strangers on the internet?"
"Please, David... if you divorce me, I have nothing!" she begged, crawling toward him and clinging to the cuffs of his trousers. "My followers will find out! My reputation will be ruined!"
"Your reputation was built on sand, Melissa," David said, pulling his leg away and stepping back toward the front door. "And the tide just came in."
He walked out of the house, leaving Melissa weeping hysterically amid the mess of legal documents on the kitchen floor. He got into his SUV and drove straight to the bank, immediately freezing all secondary credit cards and closing their joint checking accounts.
Within six hours, Melissa’s phone began vibrating with nonstop notifications. Her credit card at the luxury grocery store was declined. Her brother’s gas card was revoked.

By evening, Julian stormed into the main house in a furious panic, carrying two packed suitcases. "Melissa! What the hell is going on?! David’s lawyer showed up with two sheriff's deputies and gave me an eviction order! My keycard to the guest house doesn't work!"
Melissa didn't answer. She sat in the dark living room, staring blankly at the empty dining table where her cruel whispered words twenty-four hours earlier had cost her an entire empire.
