Chapter 10 - The Table of Honor

One year later.
The Brookline Victorian home was alive with golden warmth, the rich aroma of roasted turkey, fresh herbs, warm cinnamon, and Eleanor’s legendary homemade yeast rolls drifting through every room.
Snow fell gently against the frosted windowpanes, but inside, the massive dining room was filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and genuine joy.
Around the grand oak table sat twelve people: David, several veteran nurses and young resident doctors from the pediatric ward who had no local family to celebrate with, and Dr. Sarah Lin, a brilliant, warmhearted pediatric cardiologist David had been courting for six months.
Sarah, wearing a cozy green wool sweater, was laughing merrily as she helped Eleanor carry the massive carved turkey platter to the table.
"Eleanor, this looks and smells like heaven," Sarah said warmly, kissing the older woman’s cheek with genuine affection. "You must teach me your secret for the rosemary stuffing."
"The only secret, my dear," Eleanor replied with a beaming smile, "is putting love into every single pinch of salt."
David stood at the head of the table, holding up a glass of sparkling cider, his eyes glistening with deep, unshakable gratitude as he looked around at the people gathered together.
"Before we carve the bird," David announced, tapping his glass gently, drawing everyone's joyful attention. "I want to propose a toast to the true center of this home."
He walked over to the head of the table, pulling out the grand, velvet-cushioned armchair—the seat of honor. He gently guided his seventy-three-year-old mother into the chair, wrapping a soft cashmere shawl around her shoulders.
"To the woman who gave up her own meals so I could eat," David said, his voice ringing with pure love and devotion. "To the woman whose hands built my future, whose heart taught me compassion, and whose place will never, ever be anywhere but at the very head of our table."
The room erupted into cheerful applause and raised glasses. "To Eleanor! Happy Thanksgiving!"
Sarah pulled out her camera, smiling brightly. "Alright, everyone! Squeeze together for the family photo! Eleanor, right in the center!"

Eleanor laughed, her eyes crinkling with radiant happiness as David wrapped his arm tightly around her on one side, and Sarah leaned in lovingly on the other.
The camera shutter clicked, capturing a timeless, beautiful moment of genuine warmth, respect, and unconditional love—a picture-perfect family where the woman who cooked the feast was finally celebrated as the greatest blessing of all.
