Chapter 5 - The Unraveling Lie

Melissa’s shock rapidly morphed into venomous spite as she realized her tears had zero effect on David’s resolve. She slammed the divorce papers onto the counter, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"You think you can just throw me out like trash?" she sneered, dropping all pretense of sweetness. "I’m your legal wife! Under state law, I am entitled to half of this house, half of your medical practice equity, and massive monthly alimony! I will bleed you dry in court, David Brooks!"

David didn't flinch. In fact, a faint, mocking smile touched the corner of his lips.

"Did you really think a chief surgical fellow wouldn't read the fine print before getting married?" David asked quietly, tapping the back of the folder. "Turn to exhibit C."

Melissa frantically flipped through the pages until her eyes landed on a notarized prenuptial agreement signed three weeks before their wedding ceremony.

"My mother may be a simple woman from working-class Scranton," David explained softly, "but she raised a son who understands contracts. That prenuptial agreement explicitly states that any assets derived from family inheritances, including the funds used to purchase this home, remain entirely separate property."

Melissa’s breath hitched in her throat as she read the ironclad clauses drafted by one of the top estate attorneys in Boston.

"Furthermore," David continued, stepping closer, "there is a character and conduct clause regarding elder abuse and emotional misconduct within the domestic residence. If triggered, spousal maintenance is capped at zero dollars."

"You set me up!" Melissa screamed, throwing the papers into the air, sending white sheets fluttering across the kitchen floor like autumn leaves. "You planned this!"

"No, Melissa," David said with profound sadness. "I prayed every single day that you genuinely loved me and respected my family. I gave you three years of patience, expensive cars, designer bags, and unlimited credit cards, hoping you would grow up."

He pointed toward the front door. "My lawyer has already filed the emergency exclusive-occupancy motion. You have forty-eight hours to pack your clothes and your camera equipment. Julian has twenty-four hours to vacate the guest house."

"Where am I supposed to go?!" Melissa cried, terror finally breaking through her rage. "My parents' house is under foreclosure! That's why they were trying to move in with us after the new year!"

David froze, his eyebrows arching in utter astonishment. "What did you say?"
