Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth in Table Twelve

The silence stretched between them like a blade drawn from a velvet sheath. Dante stood suspended under the amber glow of the hallway sconces, his fingers hovering where Clare’s warm skin had been just a heartbeat before. For nine years, her warmth had been the anchor pulling him back from the blood-soaked gutters of New York’s underworld. Now, her retreat left an abyss that chilled him to the marrow.
""She is an investor’s daughter, Clare,"" Dante whispered, his voice raspy, fighting against the sudden knot tightening around his throat. ""Foster Capital holds fifty million in our maritime logistics portfolio. It was an appearance. A calculated move to close the harbor acquisition before the southern syndicates moved in.""
Clare looked at him, not with the furious tears of an abandoned wife, but with the analytical detachment of an auditor inspecting a bankrupt ledger. ""A business meeting does not require lace cuffs brushing your collar, Dante. It does not require reserving table twelve, where you promised me under oath nine years ago that no other woman would ever sit. And it certainly does not require holding her hand like she is the center of your universe while your ring digs into her fingers.""
Dante reached out, attempting to catch her wrist, but Clare stepped cleanly into the elevator foyer, hitting the call button. The metallic chime sounded unnervingly like a funeral bell. ""Don't walk away from me,"" he growled, the dangerous mob boss resurfacing out of raw panic. ""You know what happens when things are taken outside these walls. You know what I do to protect what is mine.""
""I am not a shipment of contraband, Dante. I am not an asset on your ledger,"" she said, her voice dropping into a register that sliced through his intimidating posture. ""And you gave up your right to protect me the second you invited a viper into the bed we built together.""
Before he could answer, Marco Bell rounded the corner, his radio earpiece buzzing with static. ""Boss,"" Marco said under his breath, his eyes darting cautiously between Dante's clenched jaw and Clare’s icy composure. ""Miss Foster is making a scene in the main dining room. She's threatening to call her father's security detail and cancel the harbor bonds. The patrons are taking videos.""
Dante cursed violently in Sicilian, but when he turned back toward Clare, the steel elevator doors were already sliding shut. Through the narrowing gap, he caught the precise moment her calm facade cracked—not into grief, but into a lethal, resolute finality.
In the elevator descending to the subterranean offices of Bennett Hospitality, Clare leaned her head against the cool polished steel. Her fingers reached into the deep pocket of her tailored trousers. They curled around a heavy, antique brass key attached to an encrypted titanium flash drive.
She had found it that morning in the false bottom of the antique humidor Dante kept in his study at their Hudson Valley estate. Dante thought she was just the high-society restaurateur who kept his public image spotless while he controlled the docks. He had forgotten that Clare Bennett was an accountant’s daughter before she was a mafia wife. The files on that drive didn't just expose Bianca Foster's father for money laundering; they contained every offshore routing number, every corrupt maritime inspector, and every hidden shell company Dante owned.
Dante had assumed she was blind because she loved him. He was about to learn that love had simply made her patient, and now that the love was dead, the patience had run out.

Stepping into her office, Clare locked the heavy mahogany door. She opened her laptop, inserted the titanium drive, and watched the encrypted files populate the screen. Across the top ran the primary title: Operation Cerberus—The Romano-Foster Syndicate.
""You told me you'd be in Washington, Dante,"" Clare whispered into the empty room, her jaw set like stone. ""Let's see how much Washington will cost you when your throne begins to burn.""
