Chapter 6 - The Salt on Bennett's Shore

The rain beat steadily against the wooden shingles of the old cottage on the rocky bluffs of Bennett’s Cove, Maine. The Atlantic was angry, sending grey, foamy waves crashing against the jagged granite rocks below. Inside, a fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting a warm orange glow across the worn hardwood floors and book-lined walls.

Clare sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a steaming mug of black tea between both hands. Her face looked tired, drained of the polished armor she wore in the city, but her eyes were clearer than they had been in years.

Outside, the crunch of gravel signaled an arrival.

She didn't startle. She didn't reach for the small revolver her father had given her, which rested quietly in the desk drawer. She had known he would come. Dante Romano was an apex predator; he never abandoned a hunt, especially when the prize was his own soul.

The heavy oak door opened, bringing with it a blast of damp, salty ocean air. Dante stepped inside, drenched from the rain, his dark hair plastered against his forehead. He wore no bodyguards, no tailored Italian suit, no polished shoes. He wore an old dark sweater, worn jeans, and the haunted expression of a condemned man walking to the gallows.

He closed the door gently behind him, standing on the braided rug, dripping water onto the floor.

""You didn't lock the door,"" he said softly, his voice trembling slightly.

""If I locked it, you would have broken the window,"" Clare replied, not turning to look at him, her gaze fixed on the dancing flames. ""And I like these windows. My grandfather built them.""

Dante took a slow, hesitant step forward, stopping when he reached the edge of the living room rug. ""You saved me, Clare. You destroyed Foster, outmaneuvered the feds, and protected every man under my command. And you did it while I was acting like a fool.""

""I didn't do it for you, Dante,"" she said quietly. ""I did it for the woman I was nine years ago. The girl who believed that standing beside Dante Romano was an honor. I didn't want that girl’s legacy to end with federal handcuffs and a tabloid scandal.""

""Bianca was never in my bed, Clare. I swear on my mother’s soul,"" he pleaded, his voice breaking with genuine agony. ""I was using her family to secure the port so I could finally retire our family from the syndicate. I wanted to give you the clean, legitimate life you always deserved. I thought if I secured the harbor, no one could ever touch us again.""

Clare turned her head slowly, looking at him with tears finally shimmering in her dark eyes. ""You don't understand, do you? I never needed a clean empire, Dante. I never cared about the harbor or the towers. I cared about the man who carried me barefoot six blocks through Manhattan because my heel broke. I cared about the man who whispered his fears into my hair at three in the morning when the whole world thought he felt no fear.""

She stood up, letting the blanket fall to the armchair. ""When you brought that woman to table twelve, you killed that man. You traded him for a monster who thought his wife could be pushed into the corner while he played games with cheap, ambitious thieves.""
