Chapter 8 - The Severed Ties

Two days later, the rain had stopped, replaced by a cold, blinding sunshine reflecting off the Maine tides. Inside the cottage, Dante sat at the small kitchen table, staring at the satellite phone resting beside a stack of notarized transfer documents.

Clare stood by the stove, pouring two cups of dark roast coffee. She set one before him, her touch deliberate, calm, and steady.

""If you make this call, Dante, there is no going back,"" she said, leaning against the counter. ""The Commission will never welcome you back into their fold. You will be stripped of your titles, your street enforcers, and your seat at the high table.""

Dante looked up at her, reaching out to gently curl his fingers around hers. For the first time since he had arrived, she didn't pull away.

""They were never my family, Clare,"" Dante answered with quiet resolve. ""They were just ghosts I used to build a cage around myself.""

He picked up the satellite phone and dialed the secure line to the Five Families' high council in Manhattan.

The call connected on the second ring. The gravelly, authoritative voice of Don Carmine Lucchese echoed into the small coastal kitchen. ""Dante. We have been waiting forty-eight hours for you to show your face in Queens. The Foster empire has collapsed, and the feds are crawling all over the lower docks. We need a commander, not a ghost.""

""I am stepping down, Carmine,"" Dante said, his voice ringing with crystalline clarity.

A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the line.

""Repeat that, Romano,"" Lucchese growled.

""I am surrendering my commission seat. Marco Bell will assume control of all logistics operations in Brooklyn. All maritime contracts and legitimate shipping lines will be divided equally between the North Side and Queens under Vincent Moretti’s supervision. The Romano name is officially retired from the syndicate.""

""You don't walk away from the table, Dante!"" Carmine’s voice rose in a thunderous shout. ""You know the rules of this life! Blood in, blood out!""

""Then come to Maine and take it, Carmine,"" Dante replied coldly, the ancient predator within him flaring one final time with terrifying certainty. ""Bring every gun you have left. But know this: I leave behind full forensic accounting files of every syndicate operation with three separate international law firms. If a single man crosses the state line, those files go directly to the Attorney General. You leave me in peace, and you keep the empire. Threaten my wife or my quiet, and I will burn the entire city down around your heads.""

Dante didn't wait for a response. He severed the connection, popped open the back of the device, extracted the encrypted chip, and dropped it into his mug of hot coffee, watching the electronics sizzle and die.

He looked across the table at Clare.

""It's done,"" he whispered.

Clare looked at the dead phone, then looked at Dante. For the first time in nine years, the perpetual tension in his shoulders had completely vanished. He was no longer the Don of New York. He was just a man stripped down to his bare truth, choosing her above an entire world of power.
