Chapter 9 - The Slow Mending of Scars

Spring arrived along the Maine coast with a sudden explosion of wild heather and green salt grass. The bitter winter winds softened into warm ocean breezes carrying the scent of pine needles and blooming apple blossoms.

Dante’s hands, which had once held pistols and signed million-dollar illicit transactions, were now covered in fresh calluses and wood dust. He spent his mornings restoring the cottage's weathered wraparound porch, sanding the cedar planks until the rich amber grain emerged smooth and bright.

He lived in the small guest cabin at the edge of the property, respecting Clare's boundary without a single complaint. Every evening, he would leave a basket of fresh firewood on her porch, along with wild berries he picked along the cliffs, never intruding on her space unless she invited him.

He was courting his wife all over again, from the very beginning.

One Thursday evening, as the sun dipped into the sea in a brilliant display of crimson and gold, Clare opened the cottage door and walked down the steps toward the porch where Dante was finishing a newly built cedar bench.

""Dante,"" she called softly.

He stopped his work immediately, wiping his brow with the back of his forearm and setting his tools aside. ""Yes, Clare?""

""The local community board approved the permits for the waterfront bakery and bistro this morning,"" she said, leaning against the railing with a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. ""I need an executive manager who knows how to handle stubborn suppliers and keep the kitchen accounts balanced. The pay is terrible, and the hours are worse.""

Dante felt a warm bloom in his chest that nearly made his knees buckle. He stepped closer, keeping a respectful distance, his dark eyes brimming with unspeakable hope. ""Does the position come with board and lodging?""

""It comes with a room in the main house,"" Clare replied, her voice soft and tender. ""Provided the manager promises never to withhold the truth, no matter how terrifying it might seem.""

Dante closed the distance between them slowly, giving her every opportunity to step back. When she remained still, he reached up, his rough, calloused fingers gently cradling her cheek. She leaned into his palm, closing her eyes as a soft sigh escaped her lips.

""I swear it on every breath I have left, Clare,"" he murmured, his thumb brushing away a rogue tear that spilled down her cheek. ""No more secrets. No more shadows. Just you, me, and whatever life we choose to build with our own hands.""

That night, for the first time in six months, Dante Romano did not sleep in the cold guest cabin. He lay beside his wife, his arms wrapped securely around her waist, listening to the steady rhythm of her heartbeat matching the gentle lapping of the ocean waves against the rocks outside.
