Chapter 4 - Shadows Over Brooklyn Pier

The Atlantic wind howling through the Brooklyn shipyards carried the pungent scent of salt, rust, and impending violence. Fog rolled over the black water, wrapping the massive metal shipping containers in an eerie, spectral shroud. Dante arrived with three blacked-out SUVs, his trusted lieutenants fanning out into the darkness with their coats unbuttoned, fingers inches from their holstered firearms.
Arthur Foster stood waiting beneath the buzzing sodium floodlights of warehouse number four. Dressed in a bespoke camel coat with a silk scarf, the billionaire financier looked visibly rattled, smoking a cigarette down to the filter with rapid, nervous puffs.
""Dante! Thank God you're here,"" Arthur barked, tossing the stub onto the damp asphalt and crushing it under his Italian leather loafer. ""Vincent Moretti's wolves are circling the perimeter. Someone leaked our private logistics codes. We need to move the offshore bond manifests onto the freighters right now, before the port authorities start their morning shifts.""
Dante walked slowly toward the older man, his footsteps echoing ominously against the concrete. His hands were buried deep in the pockets of his trench coat.
""Where is Bianca, Arthur?"" Dante asked softly, his tone deceptively calm.
Arthur furrowed his brow, an irritated scoff escaping his lips. ""She's at the penthouse in Tribeca, sleeping. What does Bianca have to do with this? We have fifty million dollars in transit, Dante! Focus on the business!""
""I am focusing on the business,"" Dante said, stopping two feet away. ""Specifically, the business you've been running with Special Agent Miller of the FBI's organized crime task force.""
Arthur’s face instantly lost every ounce of color. His eyes twitched toward the shadows near the crane control towers. ""I... I don't know what kind of paranoid nonsense you're talking about, Romano. Have you lost your mind?""
""Check your left lapel, Arthur,"" Dante whispered, stepping closer until his breath misted in the cold air between them. ""The wire you've been wearing since last October. The one your daughter assured you I was too distracted to notice because she was keeping me busy with reservations at Manhattan’s finest restaurants.""
From the shadows behind the containers, the sharp metallic click of rifles cocking broke the night. Four federal agents in tactical vests stepped out from the blind spots, weapons raised.
""Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Hands where we can see them!""
Dante didn't flinch. He didn't even draw his weapon. He simply smiled, a cold, predatory grimace that made Arthur Foster step backward in utter dread.
""You're a bit late, Agent Miller,"" Dante called out toward the tactical team. ""And you're standing on private property owned solely by the Bennett Trust. Did you bring a maritime search warrant signed by a federal magistrate? Or were you relying on Mr. Foster's illegal surveillance footage?""
Before Agent Miller could bark an order, a siren blared from the waterfront. A harbor patrol cutter sliced through the fog, its searchlight blinding the tactical agents. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the entire pier as New York State Port Authority police and state troopers swarmed the perimeter gate.
Out from the passenger side of the lead state cruiser stepped an attorney holding a thick stack of certified documents, followed by none other than Vincent Moretti himself, smiling like a cat who had swallowed a canary.
""Special Agent Miller!"" the attorney announced through a megaphone. ""We have an emergency injunction issued by the State Supreme Court. Arthur Foster is under arrest for enterprise corruption, grand larceny, and illegal disposal of hazardous cargo. You and your federal squad are officially trespassing on an active state jurisdiction crime scene.""
Arthur Foster began to scream in panicked fury, turning to run, but Marco Bell intercepted him with a heavy shoulder check that slammed the billionaire hard into the wet asphalt.

Dante turned away from the chaos, ignoring the shouting agents and the flashing lights. He looked toward the black sedan parked near the entrance of the pier. Sitting in the back seat, illuminated faintly by the amber dash lights, was Clare.
She looked at him through the tinted window, her eyes steady, her expression unreadable. Dante took a step toward her, his heart pounding harder than it ever had in any shootout. But before he could reach the car, the driver shifted into gear, and Clare vanished into the Manhattan night.
