Chapter 9 - Cleansing the Empire

The purge of the Varenna syndicate was swift, silent, and total.
Within forty-eight hours of the council meeting, Luca’s enforcers seized every asset Dominic and Julian had secretly accumulated over the past twelve years. The eighty-five million dollars stolen through Aegis Maritime was repatriated into a trust fund legally registered under our unborn child’s name. Dr. Bennett signed a full, detailed confession before being handed over to federal authorities for massive medical fraud and organized racketeering, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his miserable life inside a maximum-security penitentiary.
As for Dominic and Julian, Luca chose a punishment far worse than death. Stripped of their wealth, their names erased from the family registry, and permanently exiled from the United States under penalty of immediate execution, they were placed on an unmarked cargo freighter bound for a remote Mediterranean holding facility, never to set foot on American soil again.
I stood on the glass balcony of the Beacon Hill manor three days later, watching the morning sun break through the clouds, bathing Boston Harbor in brilliant gold. The dark, suffocating fog that had hung over the estate for twelve years had finally evaporated.
A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Luca pulled me gently against his chest, resting his chin on my shoulder. His hands moved down, splaying possessively across my stomach.
""The doctor called about your mother this morning,"" Luca murmured, his voice soft and tender against my ear.
I turned in his arms, my heart fluttering with anticipation. ""What did they say?""
""The experimental cellular immunotherapy was completely successful,"" he smiled warmly, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. ""Her lymphoma is in full clinical remission. She is being transferred to a private recovery suite in Brookline this afternoon. She wants to see her daughter... and her son-in-law.""
Tears of pure happiness welled up in my eyes. The nightmare was over. The debt that had driven me to marry this terrifying man had turned into the greatest salvation of my life.

""Thank you, Luca,"" I whispered, resting my head against his shoulder.
""No, Evelyn,"" he said, turning my face toward his and kissing me with a tenderness that melted away every lingering shadow of his violent world. ""You saved me. You gave me back my life, my family, and my future. From the second you signed that contract, you were never just a wife of convenience. You are my queen.""
