Chapter 3 - The Web of Greed

We returned to the Beacon Hill mansion under the shroud of early twilight. Luca immediately summoned his financial comptroller, Marco Rossi, along with his inner circle of trusted lieutenants. The study smelled of burnt paper and stale espresso as the men worked tirelessly behind locked doors.

I sat on the velvet sofa, listening as Marco unrolled vast financial ledgers and bank routing slips across the heavy table.

""Look at this, Boss,"" Marco said, pointing his finger at a series of offshore holding companies based in the Cayman Islands and Zurich. ""For the last twelve years, Don Dominic has been systematically diverting four percent of all shipping revenues from the Boston harbor terminals into an entity called 'Aegis Maritime Corp.' On paper, Aegis provides logistics consulting. In reality, it is wholly owned by Dominic and his son, Julian.""

""How much?"" Luca asked coldly, rolling up his shirt sleeves to reveal the intricate black ink tattoos spanning his forearms.

""Over eighty-five million dollars,"" Marco replied without blinking. ""And that's just the maritime cut. When the family charter declared you sterile, Dominic took over the trust funds established for future generations of the Varenna dynasty. He argued that since you could never produce an heir, the money should be held in trust for Julian's future children.""

I gasped softly. Julian was Dominic's twenty-eight-year-old son—a reckless, arrogant playboy known for spending millions at European casinos and leaving bloody messes in his wake for Luca to clean up. The thought of an entire empire being stolen so Julian could inherit it made my blood run cold.

""And Dr. Bennett?"" Luca asked, his voice deceptively calm. ""What did Bennett get for his loyalty?""

""A luxury medical estate in Martha's Vineyard purchased in 2015, and three million dollars funneled through a shell company in Panama,"" Marco answered, sliding a signed deed across the table. ""Dominic bought him outright. Bennett has been prescribing you high-dose hormonal suppressants disguised as blood-thinners ever since your shooting, Boss. The pills you took every morning for 'circulation'? They were designed to keep your sperm count artificially suppressed, just in case your body tried to naturally heal itself.""

Luca froze. His gaze slowly shifted to the antique crystal decanter on his desk, beside which sat the small amber prescription bottle he had taken every single morning for over a decade.

""He poisoned me,"" Luca said, the words barely louder than a whisper, yet vibrating with an intensity that made the seasoned mobsters in the room flinch. ""Every morning for twelve years, my own uncle fed me chemicals to ensure his lie remained true.""

""You stopped taking them two months ago,"" I said suddenly, remembering the conversation we had shortly after our wedding when he complained of severe stomach migraines. ""You said they gave you nausea and threw the entire bottle in the trash.""

""And that was all your body needed,"" Marco added quietly. ""Once the suppression cleared from your system, your reproductive health restored itself within weeks.""

Just then, heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway. The study door was pushed open without an announcement.

Don Dominic Varenna stood in the doorway. He was sixty years old, impeccably dressed in a tailored pinstripe suit, his silver hair slicked back with expensive pomade, leaning slightly on an ivory-handled walking cane. Beside him stood his son Julian, whose arrogant, predatory gaze immediately settled on me.

""Luca,"" Dominic boomed, his voice carrying the false warmth of a venomous snake. ""I heard from Dr. Bennett that Evelyn missed her appointment today. In our family, we look after our daughters-in-law. When a young woman looks as pale and sick as she did last night, we ensure she receives the finest care.""

Luca did not flinch. He leaned back against the edge of his desk, crossing his arms casually, completely shielding me from their view. ""Evelyn merely had mild food poisoning from the scallops, Uncle Dominic. She is resting now under the care of my private physician. There is no need to trouble Dr. Bennett.""

Dominic's eyes narrowed into slits. His gaze flicked over Luca's shoulder, resting squarely on my midsection. ""Is that all it is, nephew? Food poisoning? Because Camilla heard whispers from the kitchen staff that Evelyn has been ordering morning remedies. You wouldn't be hiding something from the family council, would you?""

""What could I possibly hide, Uncle?"" Luca asked, his voice dripping with icy sarcasm. ""You of all people know my medical condition better than anyone.""

Dominic's face twitched. For a brief second, doubt and panic flickered across the old man's weathered features, but he quickly recovered with a sinister grin. ""Of course. Which is why Julian and I have called an emergency session of the High Council for tomorrow evening at the harbor warehouse. It’s time we officially transfer the Varenna Trust voting shares to Julian. Since you cannot produce an heir, the charter requires the vote before the fiscal year ends.""

Julian smirked, tossing his car keys in the air. ""Don't take it personally, cousin. We just want to keep the money in the family.""

""I wouldn't miss it for the world,"" Luca replied smoothly. ""Tomorrow night, Uncle. Let us settle the family charter once and for all.""
