Chapter 1 - The Blood-Stained Diagnosis

The grandfather clock in the corner of Luca’s mahogany-paneled study ticked with agonizing precision. Outside, rain lashed against the bulletproof windows overlooking Boston’s shimmering skyline, but inside, the air was suffocatingly thin. Luca stood entirely motionless, his large frame rigid under his tailored charcoal suit. Between his fingers, the old, yellowed medical folder crinkled under a grip so tight his knuckles turned bone-white. I stayed frozen near the leather sofa, both hands pressed against my stomach as if shielding the tiny, fragile heartbeat that had just shattered my husband's reality.
""Luca, please talk to me,"" I whispered, my voice trembling in the vast silence. ""You think I'm lying? You think I was with someone else?""
The accusation hung in the air like poison, but when Luca finally turned to look at me, his dark eyes held no anger toward me. Instead, they burned with a raw, terrifying fury that made my breath catch in my throat.
""I know you haven't touched another man, Evelyn,"" he said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. ""I have guards on you twenty-four hours a day. Not because I didn't trust you, but because my enemies would butcher you to get to me. I know every step you take. I know every person you speak to. The child is mine.""
A wave of dizzying relief washed over me, but it was instantly swallowed by dread. ""Then why... why did you pull that file out?""
Luca walked slowly toward his desk and threw the medical folder down. Yellowed lab reports spilled out, dated twelve years ago. ""When I was twenty-three, I was ambushed on the North End docks. Six bullets tore through my body. One severed an artery near my pelvis. I spent three weeks in a medically induced coma at St. Jude's Private Pavilion. When I woke up, my uncle Dominic was sitting by my bedside with Dr. Arthur Bennett, our family’s chief physician.""
I moved closer to the desk, peering down at the official hospital letterhead bearing the stamp of St. Jude's.
""Dominic was weeping,"" Luca continued, a bitter, humorless sneer curling his lips. ""He hugged me and told me that while the surgeons had managed to save my life, the trauma and complications had left me permanently sterile. Dr. Bennett confirmed it. He produced these very reports showing total testicular failure and irreversible nerve damage. They told me that continuing the direct Varenna bloodline was medically impossible.""
""Why would they tell you that if it wasn't true?"" I asked, my fingers tracing the faded signature of Dr. Arthur Bennett.
Luca pulled out his gold lighter and spun the wheel, staring at the dancing blue flame. ""Because twelve years ago, my father, Don Vincent Varenna, rewrote the family charter before he died. Under our syndicate’s blood law, only a direct heir who can produce legitimate progeny can inherit the absolute majority shares of the Varenna Shipping and Logistics Empire. If the primary heir is physically incapable of fathering a legitimate child, the empire defaults to the eldest living sibling or uncle.""
The realization hit me like an icy bucket of water. ""Your uncle Dominic.""
""Dominic took forty percent of the voting shares the moment this document was filed with our estate attorneys,"" Luca snarled, his voice vibrating with lethal malice. ""For twelve long years, I believed my body was broken. I accepted the shame. I buried my dreams of ever holding a son or daughter in my arms. I let Dominic handle our offshore operations because I thought I owed him for running an empire I couldn't fully secure.""
He slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk with such force the wood splintered beneath his signet ring. ""And now my wife—a woman I married just eleven weeks ago to save her dying mother—is carrying my child. Dr. Bennett didn't just misdiagnose me, Evelyn. Dominic paid him to steal twelve years of my life.""

""What do we do now?"" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. ""Luca, if Dominic finds out I'm pregnant...""
Luca’s expression darkened into the terrifying mask of Boston’s most feared mafia don. He reached out, his calloused palm gently cupping my cheek before sliding down to rest warmly over my stomach. ""Nobody outside this room can know. If Dominic finds out you are carrying the true heir to the Varenna dynasty, he won't just challenge the pregnancy. He will put a bullet in your head before sunrise.""
