Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Over the next six months, the grand Moretti estate underwent a profound, irreversible transformation.

The armed sentries who used to patrol the front lawns were replaced by discrete, off-site monitoring systems.

Matteo systematically restructured the Moretti conglomerate, divesting from high-risk waterfront operations and channeling billions into legitimate infrastructure developments, green shipping technologies, and children’s hospitals across Illinois.

The underworld bosses in New York and Detroit whispered that Matteo Moretti had gone soft, but none of them dared test his borders.

They all remembered the night Warehouse 14 was wiped clean in ninety seconds without Matteo firing a single registered round.

Inside the estate, the dark burgundy curtains in the library were replaced with light, airy linen drapes that let the sunshine flood the antique bookshelves.

Claire was no longer the quiet widow folding linens in the laundry room.

With Matteo’s unwavering encouragement and financial backing, she had taken over the presidency of the Moretti Family Charitable Foundation, directing millions of dollars toward single mothers, orphanages, and educational scholarships.

She had her own sunny office in the west wing, right across the hall from Matteo’s study.

On a warm afternoon in May, Matteo stood in the doorway of her office, watching her review architectural blueprints for a new pediatric clinic in South Chicago.

"You're working late, Mrs. Director," Matteo teased, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed.

Claire looked up from her paperwork, a brilliant smile lighting up her face. "Some of us actually work for our living, Mr. Chairman."

Matteo walked over to her desk, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.

Claire’s breath caught in her throat. Her pen slipped from her fingers, rolling across the blueprints.

"Matteo..." she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Four years ago, you thought you were completely alone in the world, Claire," Matteo said, his voice deep, gravelly, and full of emotion. "And six months ago, I thought my life was meant to be lived in the shadows of a family curse."

He opened the box to reveal a stunning, emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the late afternoon sun like a prism.

"You and Emma brought light into this house," Matteo murmured, taking her trembling hand in his. "I don't ever want to live in the dark again. Will you marry me, Claire?"

May you like

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down Claire’s cheeks. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

"Yes," she sobbed happily against his neck. "A thousand times, yes."
