Chapter 2 - The Blood Oath Broken

Matteo wasted no time locking down the east wing.

He assigned four of his most trusted, vetted bodyguards to stand guard inside the private family quarters, sealing the doors with heavy electronic deadbolts.

"You stay here with Emma," Matteo ordered Claire, checking the slide on his customized semi-automatic pistol. "Nobody enters this room without the code word 'Magnifying Glass.' Not even the household staff."

Claire knelt beside the bed where they had carried the sleeping child. She reached out and took Matteo’s coat sleeve, her hazel eyes glistening with fear.

"Matteo... don't do this with rage," she whispered. "Men who fight with blind anger make mistakes."

Matteo paused, looking down at her hand against his tailored sleeve.

For fifteen years, every person in Chicago had looked at him with terror, submission, or calculated greed. Only this quiet woman, who ironed his shirts and protected her fatherless child, looked at him like a man who possessed a soul worth saving.

"I’m not angry, Claire," Matteo murmured softly, resting his fingers over hers for a fleeting second. "I am calculated. Go back inside."

He stepped out into the rainy courtyard, where three armored black SUVs were idling with their headlights extinguished.

Marco opened the rear passenger door for him. "Tracker shows Bellini's vehicle stopped inside Warehouse 14 at the rail yard. Adrian’s sports car has been parked inside for thirty minutes."

"Cellular jammers active?" Matteo asked, climbing into the reinforced cabin.

"Full blackout across a two-mile perimeter," Marco confirmed, slamming the heavy door shut. "If they have backup, they won't be able to call them."

The convoy surged through the wrought-iron gates into the deluge, tires hissing violently against the wet interstate.

Matteo leaned his head back against the leather headrest, his thoughts drifting back to twenty years ago, when their father lay dying in Northwestern Hospital.

Take care of Adrian, the old man had wheezed, his fingers digging into teenage Matteo’s wrist. He has ambition without patience, Matteo. He will drown if you don't hold his head above water.

Matteo had carried that promise like a sacred cross for two decades.

He had taken the federal indictments, absorbed the physical scars, and cleaned up Adrian’s reckless financial blunders so his younger brother could live like a prince without ever smelling gunpowder.

And this was the return on that sacrifice.

A betrayal plotted behind leather-bound classics, sealed with stolen photographs of an innocent widow and her five-year-old girl.

The convoy slowed to a crawl as the rusting corrugated roofs of the Gary rail yards emerged from the thick lake fog.
