Chapter 1 - The Weight of an Answer

Claire watched Matteo’s dark eyes closely, refusing to let him look away.

The silence between them stretched so thin that the rhythmic tapping of rain against the library glass sounded like gunfire.

"You hesitated," Claire whispered, her voice trembling with raw, maternal fury. "You actually hesitated."

Matteo looked down at the crumpled photograph of Claire and Emma clutched in his large, scarred hand.

"I didn't hesitate because I value power over your lives, Claire," Matteo replied, his deep voice dropping into an arctic register. "I hesitated because walking away from this table doesn't make the wolves stop hunting. It only invites them to feast."

"This is your war, Matteo!" Claire stepped forward, her small frame radiating defiance against the towering billionaire. "You brought this venom into the only house where my daughter felt safe enough to leave her nightlight off!"

On the leather sofa, five-year-old Emma stirred beneath the heavy cashmere coat. Her little fingers twitched against her plastic magnifying glass, whispering softly in her sleep about bad men and hidden books.

Matteo walked to the couch and adjusted the coat over the child’s shoulders with painstaking gentleness.

"The men who took this picture don't want a negotiation," Matteo said quietly, staring at the little girl's peaceful face. "They want the shipping ports, the transit lines, and every ledger my father built. But more than that, they want to see if I can be broken."

"And can you?" Claire challenged, crossing her arms over her chest.

Matteo turned back to her, his jaw set like carved granite.

"Not by them," he said. "And never at the expense of this child."

The brass library telephone buzzed twice with a low, discrete hum.

Matteo picked up the receiver, pressing it against his ear without taking his eyes off Claire.

"Speak," he commanded.

"Boss," his head of tactical security, Marco, spoke through the line. "Robert Bellini's private sedan just left the south estate gates. He didn't take the highway toward his condo in Lincoln Park. He’s heading out toward the abandoned rail yards in Gary."

Matteo’s grip tightened until the plastic frame of the receiver cracked.

"Who authorized the gate opening?"

"Your brother, boss," Marco answered grimly. "Adrian called the security checkpoint directly and logged Robert out as an emergency courier."

Matteo set the receiver down with chilling deliberation.

Emma’s childish observation had been terrifyingly accurate: the man who poured his morning coffee and the brother he had raised with his own hands were working from the exact same playbook.
