Chapter 7 - The Master Returns

By 4:00 AM, the convoy returned to the Moretti estate.

The sweeping iron gates stood wide, flanked by heavily armed security teams and state police cruisers quietly wrapping up the perimeter sweep.

The estate grounds were untouched, peaceful, and bathed in the soft amber glow of landscape lanterns.

Matteo walked into the grand marble foyer, stripping off his wet coat and handing it to Marco.

He climbed the grand curved staircase to the east wing, his leather shoes making no sound against the thick crimson carpet.

He stopped outside the master suite door and knocked three times.

"Magnifying Glass," he spoke in a low, clear tone.

A moment later, the deadbolts clicked open.

Claire stood in the doorway, wearing an oversized gray cardigan, her dark hair pulled back in a loose braid. Her eyes were rimmed with exhaustion and fear, but the moment she saw Matteo standing in one piece, a shuddering breath of relief escaped her lips.

"You're alive," she whispered.

"I am," Matteo replied, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him.

Inside, the stone fireplace was crackling with warm, orange flames.

On the massive four-poster bed, Emma was still fast asleep, clutching her stuffed bear with her plastic magnifying glass resting on the bedside table.

Claire leaned against the wooden dresser, her hands trembling as the adrenaline of the night finally began to fade.

"Is it over?" she asked softly.

"It is," Matteo said, walking toward her, stopping just two feet away. "Robert is in federal custody. Dominic Luciano is on his way back to New York with no army and no leverage. And Adrian has been permanently exiled from the Midwest."

Claire looked up at him, noticing the profound, aching sadness hidden beneath his stoic expression.

"Your brother," she murmured gently. "That had to tear your heart out."

Matteo looked away toward the fire. "A man who endangers an innocent child to hurt his brother is no longer family, Claire. He made his choice. I made mine."

Claire took a tentative step closer, reaching out to gently touch his arm.

"You protected us," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "You gave up forty million dollars in leverage, dismantled your own inner circle, and risked everything... just to make sure Emma woke up safe."

Matteo turned back to her, his dark eyes softening with a rare, breathtaking warmth.

"Emma saved my life in that library, Claire," he whispered. "And you... you gave this house something it hasn't had in thirty years."

May you like

"What's that?"

"A reason to keep the light on."
