Chapter 10 - The Secret in the Books

One year after that stormy midnight in the library, the Moretti estate was alive with celebration.

The sweeping green lawns overlooking Lake Michigan were covered in white tents, fairy lights, and hundreds of blooming white peonies.

Guests from all over Chicago—business leaders, hospital directors, city officials, and lifelong friends—were laughing and dancing to a live jazz orchestra playing under the stars.

Inside the quiet library, the French doors stood wide open to the warm summer breeze.

Matteo stood in front of the antique bookshelves on the eastern wall, wearing his black wedding tuxedo with a white peony pinned to his lapel.

Beside him stood six-year-old Emma, wearing a beautiful miniature white lace dress, complete with a tiny floral crown in her chestnut curls.

In her right hand, as always, she held her trusty plastic magnifying glass.

"Uncle Matteo?" Emma asked, looking up at him with serious curiosity.

"Yes, my little detective?" Matteo smiled, crouching down to her eye level.

"Is there still a secret door behind the old books?"

Matteo reached out and pressed the hidden wooden panel behind the leather-bound classics.

The mechanism clicked with a soft, smooth chime, and the wooden compartment slid open.

Inside, there were no stolen yellow envelopes.

There were no surveillance photos of grocery stores, no extortion notes, and no tracking schedules.

Sitting in the velvet-lined cubby was a collection of Emma’s colorful crayon drawings: a picture of their golden retriever running on the lawn, a sketch of Claire smiling in her wedding dress, and a drawing of Matteo holding Emma’s hand under a big, smiling yellow sun.

Tucked right beside the drawings was a tiny, gold-plated miniature detective badge engraved with the words: Chief Inspector Emma Moretti.

Emma gasped, her big brown eyes widening with pure magic. She reached in and carefully picked up the gold badge, pinning it to the ribbon of her dress with shaking, excited fingers.

"I’m an official detective now!" she beamed, jumping up and down on the hardwood floor.

"You always were, sweetheart," Matteo said, wrapping his arms around her and lifting her onto his shoulder. "You're the detective who saved this whole family."

Claire stepped through the library doors, looking breathtaking in her flowing silk wedding gown, holding a glass of champagne with a radiant, peaceful smile.

"Are the detectives ready for their dance?" Claire asked, her eyes shining with unconditional love.

"We are, Mrs. Moretti," Matteo replied, holding out his hand to his wife.

Claire placed her hand in his, their fingers interlacing naturally, the diamond on her ring catching the warm light of the crystal chandelier.

Together, the three of them walked out of the library, leaving the shadows and the secrets behind forever, stepping forward hand in hand into the bright, boundless warmth of their new life.
