Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Groom

The grand ballroom of the country club reception hall was filled with music and nervous murmuring when the double doors swung open. Mark was standing near the champagne fountain, laughing tensely with a group of his wealthy business partners and his haughty mother, Evelyn. When he saw us walk in, his smile froze. Sophie entered first, head held high, followed closely by Daniel, still proudly wearing the lavender dress, Arthur, and me. The room fell utterly silent; the quartet stopped playing mid-measure.
Mark rushed toward Sophie, attempting to wear a mask of relief. “Sophie! Darling, thank God! Where did you go? We were so worried! Look, whatever Daniel said, we can sort it out in private—” “We don't need private, Mark,” Sophie announced, her voice ringing clear across the chandeliers. She walked directly to the DJ booth, unplugged the auxiliary cord, and plugged in Emily’s recording device. Before Mark could comprehend what was happening, Emily’s voice echoed across the hundreds of high-society guests, detailing the stolen millions, the forged documents, and the extortion of our family.

Evelyn turned purple with rage. “Turn that slander off! Someone cut the power!” she shrieked, lunging toward the stage. But Arthur blocked her path, standing tall like an unbreakable wall. Meanwhile, Mark’s face twisted into an ugly, cornered sneer. He dropped the affectionate fiancé facade entirely. “You think anyone is going to believe a dead girl’s dying ravings?” Mark hissed, glaring at Sophie. “You have no proof! You just humiliated my family over a fairy tale!”
“Is this a fairy tale, Mark?” Daniel stepped forward, dumping the entire contents of the manila folder onto the center table among crystal glasses and flower centerpieces. “The forged wire transfers, the account numbers, the forensic audit Emily finished before her body collapsed—it’s all here. And two detectives from the financial crimes division are already waiting in the parking lot.” Mark’s eyes widened with pure terror. He turned toward the side exit, attempting to bolt, but two men in dark suits stepped through the doors, flashing gold badges.
