Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Sanctuary

Arthur broke the silence with a thunderous step toward the altar. “What is the meaning of this?” he demanded, his voice trembling between raw grief and mounting paranoia. “Daniel, did Emily write that? Did you know what she was talking about?” Daniel shook his head frantically, clutching the hem of the lavender dress with white knuckles. “I swear to you, Mr. Miller, she sealed it in front of me! She told me never to open it until the processional ended. She said it was Sophie’s right, and Sophie’s alone!”

Guests began murmuring aggressively. On the groom’s side of the church, Mark’s mother, Evelyn, stood up with indignant fury painted across her heavily powdered face. “This is an outrage!” she shrieked, gesturing wildly at Daniel. “This man is clearly unstable from grief! To turn a holy ceremony into a circus with absurd riddles and cheap drama? Mark, take Sophie’s hand. Let’s finish the vows and escort this lunatic out!” But Mark didn't move. He stood rooted to the carpeted altar, his eyes darting frantically toward the church foyer, beads of sweat glistening across his forehead despite the autumn chill.

Sophie looked between her groom and her sister’s grieving partner. The loving innocence that usually defined her face hardened into something unrecognizable. “Mark,” she whispered, her voice carrying through the acoustic perfection of the old chapel. “Why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?” Mark swallowed hard, tugging at his stiff tuxedo collar. “Sophie, honey, please. Daniel is heartbroken. Emily was sick, she was on heavy pain medications at the end… she wasn't thinking clearly. Let’s just get married. We can talk about whatever crazy thing she thought she found later.”

“Heavy medication?” I chimed in, unable to keep quiet any longer as a mother's intuition flared like a warning flare in my chest. I walked up the altar steps, looking straight into Mark’s shifting eyes. “Emily’s mind was razor sharp until forty-eight hours before she passed. She didn't hallucinate safety deposit boxes, Mark. And she never made a single false accusation in her entire life.” Arthur joined me, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Daniel. In that singular moment, the absurdity of Daniel’s lavender dress completely vanished; he was no longer an eccentric intruder, but a soldier standing guard over Emily’s final barricade.

“The wedding is paused,” Sophie announced clearly. The microphone on the stand picked up the sharp, decisive click of her heels turning away from Mark. Evelyn gasped dramatically, feigning faintness, while Mark lunged forward to grab Sophie’s wrist. “Sophie, you can’t do this to my family! The reception is paid for! Everyone is here!” Daniel instantly stepped between them, his towering six-foot frame looking formidable even in lavender silk. “Don't touch her,” Daniel said calmly, his tone deadly serious. “She asked for a pause. We're going to the attic.”
