Chapter 5 - The Web of Deception

The revelation struck the room like a detonated bomb. Emily’s voice continued on the tape, weaker now, but carrying an invincible defiance: “Mark thought my sickness was convenient. He thought once I died, the only person who knew his financial crimes would be gone forever. He used our family’s grief to push you into this rushed wedding, Sophie. He wanted your signature on joint bank accounts before his offshore scheme collapsed. Don't marry him, baby sister. Ruin him.” The recording clicked off into silence.

Sophie collapsed into Daniel’s chest, sobbing so violently her entire body shook. Daniel wrapped his arms around her, the soft fabric of the lavender gown absorbing her tears. “I thought he loved me,” Sophie cried into the fabric. “He was so supportive after Emily died... he brought food, he helped plan the service... it was all a lie! All of it!” Arthur’s face transformed from sorrow to a terrifying, cold rage. “He didn't just deceive you, Sophie,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a gravelly rasp. “He weaponized our daughter’s death to steal from another daughter.”

Arthur pulled out his phone, ready to dial the police, but Daniel gently placed a hand on his shoulder. “Mr. Miller, wait,” Daniel said, his eyes burning with a fierce, quiet intelligence. “If we call the cops right now, Mark will see the squad cars pull up to the church. He’ll vanish before they can question him. He has an offshore account and passports; Emily wrote it in the ledger. He’s probably waiting at the reception venue right now, wondering why we haven't returned. If we go back, we catch him in front of every investor and family member he ever lied to.”

Sophie pulled back from Daniel’s shoulder, wiping her eyes. The trembling bride was gone; in her place stood a woman who carried the unmistakable fire of her late sister. “Daniel is right,” Sophie said, straightening her tiara with icy resolve. “Mark gathered two hundred people to witness our union. Let’s make sure they witness the truth instead. Let’s go back to the church.”
