Chapter 4 - What Box 404 Contained

The First National Bank was closed for the weekend, but Arthur’s lifelong friendship with the bank manager, Thomas Vance, yielded an urgent, frantic favor. Within an hour, Thomas met our bizarrely dressed party at the side entrance—a mother in formal silk, a father in a morning coat, a bride in full lace, and a young man in a lavender dress. Thomas didn't ask questions; the grim determination on our faces made it clear that this was a matter of life or death.

The heavy steel door of the vault clicked open, bathing the windowless room in harsh fluorescent glare. Thomas slid out long metal box 404, set it on a viewing table, and left us in private. Daniel reached forward and turned the brass key. The lock yielded with a sharp click. Arthur held his breath as Sophie lifted the heavy lid. There was no gold, no jewelry, and no sentimental childhood memorabilia. Inside lay a thick manila folder labeled Project Horizon, alongside an encrypted USB drive and an audio recording device.

Sophie opened the folder. The first page was a signed financial audit from the accounting firm where Mark worked. Stapled to it were wire transfer receipts totaling over two million dollars, routed from the retirement accounts of hundreds of elderly clients into an offshore shell company. At the bottom of the approval chain was Mark’s signature—along with a forged signature belonging to Emily. “My God,” Arthur whispered, his eyes bulging as he read the transaction dates. “Mark was embezzling from his own clients. And he was setting Emily up to take the fall.”

Sophie’s hands trembled so violently she dropped the folder, scattering the bank receipts across the cold table. Daniel quickly picked up the small recording device and pressed the play button. The speaker hissed with static before a familiar, strained voice filled the small room. It was Emily, coughing softly, her breathing labored. “Sophie... if you're hearing this, Daniel succeeded. Three days before I went to the ER, I found Mark’s fake ledger. I confronted him in his office. He begged me to keep quiet, told me he was marrying you to keep the family safe. When I refused, he threatened to ruin our dad’s pension fund, which he had secretly tied into his firm’s bad debts. Then, my health gave out... but Mark didn't stop. He accelerated the wedding to get his hands on the trust fund Grandpa left for you.”
