Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The dawn raid took place at a boutique hotel in Marina del Rey, where Evander had been hiding out on the remainder of his personal credit lines after being locked out of the Bel Air home. Federal agents, accompanied by local law enforcement, entered the suite at six-thirty in the morning. When the door opened, local news camera crews—tipped off by an anonymous source—were already stationed in the exterior courtyard, capturing the final, unvarnished fall of Hollywood’s once-golden producer.
Evander was led out in handcuffs, his head bowed, wearing an unbuttoned dress shirt and gray sweatpants. The arrogance that had defined his career was replaced by hollow, terrified silence as he was loaded into the back of an unmarked federal cruiser. Simultaneously, across town in Glendale, federal marshals took Tamsen Vale into custody as she attempted to load several designer luggage bags into a rideshare vehicle bound for Los Angeles International Airport.
By midday, the Department of Justice issued a formal press release announcing the unsealing of a fourteen-count indictment charging Evander Vance and Tamsen Vale with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft. Marcus Vale had been detained by Swiss authorities at Zurich Airport at the request of the United States government, with extradition proceedings initiated immediately.
That afternoon, I attended the formal preliminary bail hearing at the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles. Sitting in the gallery beside Meredith, I watched Evander stand before the federal judge in a bright orange detention jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to his waist. Across the aisle, Tamsen sat trembling, her face completely free of makeup, her eyes red and swollen from sobbing.
When the federal prosecutor outlined the flight risk posed by both defendants—citing Marcus Vale's attempt to flee Zurich and the large sums of unaccounted cash diverted into offshore holdings—the judge denied bail for both Evander and Marcus. Tamsen was granted a heavily conditioned home confinement on a high electronic bond cosigned by her estranged parents, with strict surrender of her passport and travel restrictions.

As the marshals led Evander toward the side exit leading to the holding cells, he stopped and looked up into the gallery. Our eyes met across the wooden railing. He moved his lips, whispering a desperate, silent plea for forgiveness, his eyes pleading for a shred of the unconditional loyalty I had given him for seven years.
I looked at him calmly, feeling no malice, no bitterness, and no regret. Then, I slowly looked away, turning my attention to the notebook in my lap, closing the book on the ghost of who he used to be.
