Chapter 2 - The Shell Game

The ballroom plunged into instantaneous chaos as flashes erupted like a wall of lightning. Security guards firmly guided Evander back into his seat while whisperings swept through the crowd like a brushfire. Studio presidents leaned into their partners' ears, publicists began typing feverishly into their smartphones, and several table occupants scrambled away from Tamsen as if she were radioactive. I did not pause or rush; I held the remote firmly, clicked to the next slide, and watched the blood drain from Evander's face once again.
This time, the colossal projection screens did not display romance or betrayal. Instead, crisp black-and-white bank statements illuminated the hall, detailing the three transfers totaling one hundred and ninety thousand dollars sent straight into the accounts of Vale Meridian Consulting. Beneath them appeared the legal registration documents Meredith Sloan had uncovered in the Nevada corporate registry. Tamsen Vale was listed as the sole managing director, and the registered address was an empty storefront in a Las Vegas strip mall.
""For months, my production company funded development services that produced not a single page of text, not a single pitch deck, and not a single contract,"" I declared, my voice echoing over the hushed pandemonium. ""These funds were siphoned systematically from our joint development account—funds earned from the sweat of writers, editors, and production crews. When I inquired about this company, I was told production finances were too sophisticated for my artistic mind. But corporate embezzlement is remarkably simple to understand once you trace the signatures.""
Evander lunged forward into the aisle, his voice echoing over the speakers as he broke past the first usher. ""Claire, turn that off right now! Turn it off! She’s having a nervous breakdown, somebody cut the feed!"" His handsome features were twisted into an ugly snarl of panic, completely shattering the polished, suave persona he had maintained across the industry for decades. But the sound and video technicians in the control booth were union members who knew my work well, and they kept the cameras rolling, capturing every desperate, sweating inch of his public unraveling.

Tamsen threw her champagne glass to the carpet, grabbing her designer clutch as she attempted to flee toward the exit doors. But the media photographers stationed at the velvet ropes were already turning their lenses upon her, surrounding her in a blinding wall of flashes. She threw her hands over her face, stumbling in her stilettos as she realized that her attempt to humiliate me had transformed her into the lead villain of Hollywood’s most explosive public scandal.
""I accept this award tonight not as a victim, but as a creator reclaiming her own narrative,"" I concluded, stepping away from the podium with my head held high. I did not run, I did not cry, and I did not look back at Evander as he screamed my name from the base of the stage stairs. As the auditorium erupted into thunderous, stunned applause led by the female producers and writers who understood the fight all too well, I walked into the backstage corridor, where Meredith stood waiting with her leather briefcase already open.
