Chapter 6 - The Web Unravels

Within seventy-two hours, the fallout from the gala transformed into an industry-wide reckoning. The board of directors at Vanguard Pictures convened an emergency executive meeting and terminated Evander Vance’s first-look production contract with immediate effect, citing moral turpitude and breach of fiduciary trust. The prestigious agency that had represented him for fifteen years dropped him as a client before the weekend was out, scrubbing his name from their roster and returning all his calls with automated rejections.

Tamsen found herself completely ostracized. The independent thriller she had been cast in—funded entirely by the money Evander had siphoned from my accounts—halted production overnight when the completion guarantor pulled the insurance coverage. Co-stars released public statements distancing themselves from her, and her social media accounts were inundated with public scorn. The woman who had bragged about stealing my life was now unable to step out of her rented apartment without aggressive paparazzi thrusting microphones into her face.

Meanwhile, Meredith and I sat down for our most crucial meeting at the Century City offices of Blackwood Capital. Julian Sterling sat across a massive glass conference table. He was a silver-haired man in his late fifties with a reputation for merciless financial precision. Spread before him were the forensic accounting reports, Sarah Lind’s sworn affidavit, and the comparative analysis of the forged signatures.

""Mr. Vance was very convincing, Mrs. Cole,"" Sterling said, his deep voice measuring every syllable. ""He brought documentation showing board approval, your notarized power of attorney, and assurances that your primary studio was preparing to distribute the series. He walked away with three million dollars of our investment capital.""

""He presented forged documents to procure a loan under false pretenses, Mr. Sterling,"" Meredith responded firmly. ""Under California law, a contract founded upon fraud in the execution is void ab initio—it holds no legal weight. If you attempt to seize Claire’s intellectual property, we will not only sue Blackwood Capital for willful negligence in your due diligence process, but we will also introduce Sarah Lind’s testimony showing your junior loan officer received kickbacks to expedite the approval.""

Sterling’s eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced at his chief legal counsel, who offered a brief, barely perceptible nod of resignation. The threat of a public lawsuit implicating Blackwood’s internal compliance was a disaster they could not afford.

""We have no interest in holding a screenplay hostage against its true creator,"" Sterling conceded, leaning forward and closing the portfolio. ""We will void the collateral claim against 'The Silent Empire' immediately, provided your team assists the United States Attorney’s Office in recovering our capital from the overseas accounts managed by Tamsen Vale’s brother.""

""We will do more than assist,"" I replied, meeting his gaze without flinching. ""I will personally hand them the keys to the entire operation.""
