Chapter 3 - The Audit

The private conference room at Sloan & Associates on Avenue of the Stars was quiet, safe, and lined with towering windows overlooking the Los Angeles basin. It was seven o'clock the following morning, and my phone had been vibrating continuously for nine hours straight. Every trade publication, gossip portal, and major news network had splashed the ballroom footage across their front pages. The headline on Variety read: ""Award Winner Delivers Shocking Exposé from the Podium.""
Meredith poured two mugs of dark roast coffee and set a thick, bound financial binder on the mahogany table between us. Her sharp gray eyes behind designer spectacles radiated total focus. ""We officially filed the emergency freeze on all joint accounts at eight o'clock yesterday evening, right as you were walking on stage,"" she told me, tapping the binder. ""Evander attempted to initiate an international wire transfer of four hundred thousand dollars at eleven-thirty last night from a branch in Beverly Hills, but the injunction blocked it immediately.""
I took a sip of the bitter coffee, feeling the exhaustion deep in my bones, yet my mind was clearer than it had been in years. ""How bad is the damage, Meredith? Tell me everything.""
Meredith opened the binder, exposing a color-coded chart that mapped out seven years of our financial life. ""Vale Meridian was just the tip of the iceberg, Claire. Evander didn't just divert money to keep his mistress comfortable in a rented condo in West Hollywood. He leveraged the intellectual property rights to your upcoming television series, 'The Silent Empire,' as collateral for a private loan to fund an independent film company where Tamsen was named executive producer.""
My breath caught in my throat. 'The Silent Empire' was my masterpiece—a sprawling historical drama that I had written during eighteen months of sleepless nights, pouring my personal grief over my late father into every scene. Evander had promised me that he had secured prime studio backing. ""He gambled my script?"" I whispered, my voice trembling with raw fury. ""He pledged my intellectual property without my legal signature?""
May you like
""He forged your signature using a digital authorization stamp from your old production partnership,"" Meredith said coldly, sliding a notarized document toward me. The signature at the bottom looked uncannily like mine, but the date coincided with a week I had been hospitalized with pneumonia three years prior. ""He took out a three-million-dollar private mezzanine loan against your future royalties. If the film flopped—or if the loan went into default—the lenders would seize the master distribution rights to your script. He was playing Russian roulette with your entire life's work while you sat at home believing he was your guardian angel.""
Just then, the conference room telephone flashed with an urgent incoming line. Meredith picked up the receiver, listened for ten seconds, and clicked the speakerphone button. Evander's voice crackled into the room, hollow, ragged, and desperate. ""Claire! Please, if you're there, pick up. You don't understand what you've done. You've ruined us. There are people who won't hesitate to take everything from both of us if that loan isn't paid back. You have to sign the release form Meredith received this morning, or we lose the house, the studio, everything!""
