Chapter 7 - Behind Closed Doors

With the legal claims against my series dismantled, Meredith and I turned over the complete evidence dossier to federal prosecutors from the Central District of California. What began as a standard divorce petition had officially transformed into a multi-agency criminal investigation involving interstate wire fraud, money laundering, and grand theft.
One evening, Sarah Lind joined me for dinner at a quiet, discreet bistro in Santa Monica. The heavy veil of fear that had hung over her for years had finally lifted, replaced by a cautious sense of hope. Over the past three weeks, she had been working around the clock with federal forensic specialists, identifying dozens of fake vendor invoices Evander had generated to siphon development funds.
""He always told me I was unhirable anywhere else,"" Sarah said softly, wrapping both hands around her teacup. ""He made me feel like every mistake in the office was my fault, and that if I ever spoke out, he would make sure I never worked in this town again. I felt so trapped, Claire. I wanted to tell you so many times, especially when you would bring him lunch or leave sweet notes on his desk, but I was terrified of what he would do.""
I reached across the table and squeezed her hand. ""You broke the cycle, Sarah. Without your bravery, he might have succeeded in taking everything. You don't have to worry about your career ever again. When my new production banner launches next month, I want you to be my Head of Development. You have better creative instincts than he ever did, and unlike Evander, you actually have an honest soul.""
Tears welled in Sarah's eyes, and she smiled with a lightness I hadn't seen in her since the day we met. ""Thank you, Claire. I won't let you down.""

As we walked out into the cool evening ocean breeze, my phone buzzed with an urgent notification from Meredith. The federal grand jury had concluded its review of the documents. Arrest warrants had just been signed by a federal magistrate for Evander Vance, Tamsen Vale, and her brother, Marcus Vale. The final chapter of their scheme was coming to an abrupt, violent close.
That night, I slept soundly for the first time in nearly a year. The nightmare of doubting my own sanity, of wondering whether I was simply an insecure, jealous wife imagining shadows in the dark, had vanished completely. The truth had stripped away the lies, and though the road had been painful, every step had brought me closer to absolute freedom.
