Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in Lake Forest

The iron gates of Clara's neighborhood were closed, but I didn't slow down. I slammed my heavy sedan through the wooden decorative barrier, the splintering timber exploding across the hood as my car roared down the winding, tree-lined lane. Ahead, through the dense foliage, the glowing porch light of Clara's two-story colonial home came into view. Ethan's rented dark sedan was parked crookedly across the manicured lawn, its driver's side door flung wide open.
I brought my car to a sliding halt on the gravel driveway, throwing the transmission into park and leaping out into the freezing rain before the engine had even stopped idling. Behind me, the sirens of the federal vehicles were screaming through the trees, their high-beam headlights sweeping across the front facade of the house.
I didn't wait for the agents. I burst through the front door, slipping on the wet hardwood of the foyer. The house was in utter chaos. Vases were smashed across the floor, couch cushions were ripped open, and the back sliding glass door hung in jagged ribbons of safety glass.
From the top of the stairs came a terrible, agonizing cry.
I charged up the stairs, two steps at a time. In the upper hallway, David was lying against the wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder where Ethan had struck him with a heavy brass floor lamp. Ethan was standing outside the splintered master bathroom door, soaking wet, his eyes bloodshot and bulging, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker in his right hand. The doorframe was half-broken, Clara's desperate weeping audible from inside.
""Ethan!"" I roared, my voice cutting through the humid hallway air like a whip.
Ethan spun around, raising the iron poker, his face twisted into a mask of pure, demonic insanity. ""You! You ruined my life! You took everything from me! My family name, my social standing, my mother's future!""
""You did this to yourself, Ethan,"" I said, stepping forward slowly, keeping my eyes locked on his weapon, deliberately putting myself between him and the bathroom door. ""Look at yourself. Look at what you've become. You're a petty thief waving a piece of scrap iron in a suburban hallway, threatening a pregnant woman because you were too cowardly to face your own failures.""
""Shut up! Shut up!"" he screamed, his hands shaking so violently the heavy poker clattered against the wall. ""You always thought you were smarter than me! You always looked down on me! Wire the money, Emma! Pull out your phone and initiate the emergency trust transfer, or I'll end this right now!""
""There is no money for you, Ethan,"" I said with absolute, unyielding coldness. ""The Delaware shell company was dissolved twenty minutes ago by the federal court. The syndicate knows you're busted. They've already abandoned the lakefront property. You're holding an empty hand, and your mother just traded your location to the FBI in exchange for a lighter sentence at the Drake Hotel.""
Ethan's eyes widened in utter disbelief. ""You're lying... my mother would never betray me!""
""She gave them your burner phone number, your rental car license plate, and the keys to your personal safe,"" I said, taking another calm, measured step toward him. ""She sold you out the second they threatened to take away her designer clothes. You were never a family, Ethan. You were just two parasites feeding on whatever host you could find. And now the host is gone.""

Behind me, the thunder of heavy combat boots shook the staircase. ""Federal agents! Drop the weapon! Drop it now!"" Agent Rodriguez's voice echoed with terrifying authority as three laser sights painted Ethan's chest with pulsing red dots.
Ethan looked at the red dots on his chest. He looked at the heavy iron poker in his trembling hand. He looked at my cold, unblinking eyes. The madness in his expression collapsed, replaced by a sudden, pathetic wave of utter defeat. The iron poker slipped from his fingers and crashed to the floor with a hollow, metallic clang. He sank to his knees, burying his face in his hands, weeping like a helpless child as the agents swarmed forward and shoved his face into the carpet, the sharp click of the handcuffs sealing his fate forever.
