Chapter 5 - The Drake Hotel Raid

The rain was coming down in relentless sheets, blurring the glowing yellow neon of the Chicago skyline as two unmarked black SUVs pulled up to the rear entrance of the historic Drake Hotel. Accompanied by four plainclothes federal investigators, two uniformed officers, Sarah, and myself, we moved through the gilded lobby with swift, quiet purpose. The hotel manager, having been served with a federal warrant signed thirty minutes earlier by a magistrate judge, escorted us silently up the service elevator to the tenth floor.

The corridor outside the presidential suite was lined with thick crimson carpet that muffled our footsteps. Outside the door, the muffled sound of clinking champagne glasses and boisterous laughter could be heard through the heavy brass fixtures. Victoria wasn't weeping over her supposed destitution; she was celebrating.

The lead investigator, a sharp-eyed agent named Rodriguez, signaled to his team. A master keycard was inserted into the electronic lock, the green light flashed, and the door was thrown wide open.

""Federal agents! Nobody move! Step away from the electronics!"" Rodriguez announced, stepping into the grand parlor.

The scene inside froze instantly. Victoria was sitting on a velvet sofa wearing silk pajamas, a flute of vintage Dom Pérignon in her hand. Sitting across from her was not Ethan, but a sleazy, high-profile tabloid fixer named Greg Vance—no relation to my family—who had made his career selling scandalous smear campaigns to celebrity gossip magazines. On the coffee table between them sat three open laptops, stacks of printed company financial reports, and two open bottles of expensive scotch.

""What is the meaning of this outrage?!"" Victoria shrieked, jumping to her feet and spilling the champagne across her ivory silk pants. ""How dare you burst in here! Do you know who I am? I am Victoria Bradley! I am a victim of domestic harassment!""

""Ma'am, sit back down and keep your hands visible,"" Agent Rodriguez said firmly, displaying his badge and the search warrant. ""We are executing an emergency search and seizure order in connection with felony identity theft, wire fraud, and the creation of fraudulent financial instruments.""

I stepped into the room from behind the agents, folding my arms and looking down at Victoria. Her jaw dropped, the color draining from her cheeks until she looked ten years older beneath her heavy makeup.

""Emma... you... you sneak!"" Victoria hissed, her voice trembling with fury. ""You set this up! You used your corporate thugs to break in on an old, grieving woman!""

""An old, grieving woman drinking four-hundred-dollar champagne in a five-thousand-dollar-a-night suite funded by an offshore shell account,"" I replied, pointing to the open laptop on the glass table. ""Take a good look at that screen, Victoria. That's the administrative dashboard for Apex Horizons LLC. You didn't just know about Ethan's thirty-million-dollar fraudulent loan. You were an authorized signatory on the secondary disbursement accounts.""

Sarah stepped forward with a folder of forensic documents, tossing it onto the table beside the spilled champagne. ""Every wire transfer from the Delaware entity to your personal jewelry brokers over the last two years was authorized from this exact machine, Victoria. The Cartier necklace you threw a tantrum over at the auction yesterday? You weren't buying it for charity. You were using the charity auction to launder forty thousand dollars from Emma's stolen line of credit into a clean, physical asset you could pawn when Ethan's syndicate came calling.""

Victoria sank back onto the sofa, her hands trembling violently. The tabloid fixer slowly raised his hands in the air, his eyes wide with horror as he realized he had walked into a federal sting operation.

""Where is Ethan, Victoria?"" Agent Rodriguez demanded. ""Tell us now, and the prosecutor might consider recommending a federal medical facility instead of a maximum-security penitentiary for your sentence.""

Victoria's gaze darted toward the bedroom door, then down at the floor. Tears—real, desperate tears of terrified self-preservation—welled in her eyes. ""He left two hours ago,"" she whispered, her voice cracked and broken. ""He said he had one final card to play. He said if Emma wouldn't give him the money to pay off the syndicate, he was going to take the one thing she cared about more than her firm.""

My blood turned to pure ice. ""What did he say, Victoria? Tell me!""

""He went to Lake Forest,"" Victoria sobbed, burying her face in her hands. ""He went to your sister's house.""
