Chapter 3 - The Frozen Empire

By noon, the news of the attempted break-in had spread through the upper echelons of Chicago's business community like wildfire. My firm's legal team, acting in full coordination with Sarah, slapped an immediate emergency injunction on every single bank account, trading portfolio, and brokerage account associated with Ethan Bradley and his mother's socialite foundation. When an investment managing director moves to freeze assets amid criminal allegations, the banking sector doesn't wait for a formal trial; they close the gates instantly to protect themselves from liability.
I stood on the glass balcony of my firm's headquarters on Wacker Drive, watching the dark November clouds gather over the skyline. My phone buzzed on the glass conference table behind me. It was an unknown number, but I knew the cadence of the caller before I even swiped to accept the call.
""You think you're untouchable, don't you?"" Ethan's voice was hoarse, ragged, stripped of all the polished charm he had used to court me six years ago. The background was loud with the hum of traffic and distant construction noise. He was calling from a payphone or a burner device. ""You had your corporate lawyers freeze the Bradley Foundation account! My mother was at her country club trying to pay for lunch, and they threw her out! They escorted her off the property like a common criminal!""
""Your mother committed fraud by signing checks drawn on accounts funded by money you siphoned from my credit lines, Ethan,"" I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. ""You forged my signature on federal loan documents. The FBI's financial crimes unit has already taken copies of the Delaware filings Sarah pulled this morning.""
""You don't understand the people I borrowed that money from, Emma!"" Ethan screamed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. ""You think this is about the law? You think this is about courtrooms and settlements? Those offshore investors aren't bankers in suits! They're ruthless syndicates operating through maritime holding companies! If that thirty million isn't returned by midnight tomorrow, they aren't going to sue me—they're going to erase me! They know where you live, they know where your sister teaches, they know every move you make!""
""Don't you ever dare bring my family into your mess,"" I hissed, my knuckles aching as I gripped the phone. ""You made a deal with criminals because your greed and your pathetic need to look like a self-made tycoon outweighed your conscience. You spent five years treating me like a personal ATM while planning to frame me for your financial suicide.""
""You made me feel small!"" Ethan spat back, venom dripping from every syllable. ""Every time you walked into a room, everyone looked at you! The brilliant Emma Vance, the youngest managing director on the board! I was just your decorative husband! My mother had to beg you for table scraps every time she wanted to throw an event! We deserve that money! We built the social standing that allowed you to land those high-profile clients in the first place!""
""You didn't build anything, Ethan. You inherited a bankrupt surname and rode on the back of my seventy-hour workweeks,"" I said coldly. ""Turn yourself in to the federal building. It's the only place those lenders won't be able to reach you.""
""I'm not going to prison for you, Emma,"" he snarled. ""If I'm going down, I'm taking your immaculate reputation down into the dirt with me. Check the evening news at six o'clock. Let's see how much your board members love you when the whole city sees what kind of monster you really are.""
The line went dead. I lowered the phone, my heart pounding in my throat. I turned back toward the boardroom, where Sarah and our corporate public relations director, David Chen, were waiting with grave expressions on their faces.

""He went to the press, didn't he?"" I asked.
David clicked the remote control for the wall-mounted television screen. ""Worse, Emma. He didn't just go to the press. He fabricated a dossier of edited voice memos, staged medical reports, and falsified bank statements claiming you've been running an illegal offshore tax evasion ring through your late father's charitable foundation. He just leaked it to every major tabloid and financial blog in North America.""
