Chapter 2 - The Secret Signature

Ten minutes after the police secured the hallway and took my initial statement, my personal cell phone rang. It wasn't Ethan or his mother this time; it was Sarah Mitchell, my fierce and unflinching forensic attorney who had represented me through the grueling five-month divorce process. Sarah was usually the picture of sharp-witted composure, a woman who had dismantled Fortune 500 executives on the witness stand without ever breaking a sweat. But when I answered and pressed the phone to my ear, the sound of her rapid, uneven breathing made my hand tighten around the receiver.
""Emma, are you alone? Tell me the police are still in the building,"" Sarah demanded, her voice barely louder than an urgent whisper.
""They're taking statements in the corridor and reviewing the building's lobby camera footage,"" I said, leaning back against the marble kitchen island, feeling the cold stone through my trousers. ""Ethan and Victoria fled down the emergency stairwell before the squad cars pulled up to the front entrance. Sarah, what did you mean on the phone earlier? You said Ethan committed a massive crime. He's an incompetent financial advisor who could barely manage his own boutique firm, let alone pull off a sophisticated scheme.""
""Listen to me very carefully,"" Sarah said, the rustle of turning paper audible over the line. ""After you called me yesterday about Victoria's credit card being declined at the charity auction, I went back into the joint asset registry that Ethan submitted during the final disclosure hearings last month. Something didn't sit right with me. Ethan gave up his claim on the Chicago penthouse remarkably fast during mediation, remember? He fought tooth and nail over your vintage sports car collection and the vacation property in Aspen, but he handed over this specific property with almost zero resistance.""
""I bought this penthouse with my personal inheritance before we ever signed the marriage license,"" I pointed out, staring up at the twenty-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the grey waves of Lake Michigan. ""He had no legal claim to it anyway.""
""He didn't have a legal claim, Emma, but he created an illegal one,"" Sarah replied, her voice dropping into a register of deadly seriousness. ""Three years ago, when your father was in hospice care and you were spending seventy hours a week managing the firm's private equity portfolio while flying back and forth to Boston, Ethan set up a shell company registered in Delaware called Apex Horizons LLC. He filed paperwork using a forged power of attorney with your signature, naming you as the primary guarantor and sole liable entity for a thirty-million-dollar private commercial development loan through an offshore maritime lender.""
A heavy, suffocating sensation clamped down on my chest. ""A thirty-million-dollar loan? Under my name? For what? Where did that kind of money go?""
""He didn't spend it on luxury watches or fancy cars, Emma. He used your identity to secure the funding for an illicit real estate speculation project on the industrial docks of Lake Calumet,"" Sarah revealed, her tone hardening. ""And when the zoning permits fell through six months ago due to toxic waste dumping violations, the lenders called the loan. Ethan has been using the company credit cards, your personal line of credit, and fake corporate expense accounts to service the astronomical interest payments to keep the offshore investors from coming after him. But the loan default date was yesterday at five in the afternoon.""
The pieces fell into place with brutal clarity. The declined card at the auction wasn't just a minor embarrassment; it was the final domino falling. The moment I froze the supplementary cards, Ethan lost his ability to cycle payments through my credit lines to cover his fraudulent balance.

""He wasn't trying to steal my jewelry this morning, was he?"" I asked, looking at my open laptop across the room.
""No,"" Sarah said grimly. ""The encrypted security token for your family trust and your personal executive signature portal are on that specific machine. If he had accessed your system for ten minutes, he could have liquidated your personal trust fund and wired thirty million dollars to the Cayman accounts before you even woke up. He wanted to frame it as your manic episode before institutionalizing you. He's drowning, Emma. And now that he's failed to get that machine, he has nothing left to lose.""
