Chapter 4 - The Public Smear

Within two hours, the internet erupted. The headlines were sensational, vicious, and precision-engineered to generate outrage on social media platforms. ""Billion-Dollar Heiress Pushes Ailing Mother-In-Law Into Poverty While Hiding Millions In Foreign Tax Havens,"" one widely shared Facebook article screamed, complete with an old photograph of Victoria looking frail in a wheelchair, juxtaposed against a picture of me arriving at a black-tie charity gala in an emerald evening gown.

The story claimed that I had systematically abused Ethan during our marriage, manipulated the divorce proceedings through corporate bribery, and locked him out of his rightful assets while secretly siphoning company funds into unlisted accounts in the British Virgin Islands. Online commenters swarmed my company's social media accounts, demanding my immediate resignation, calling me a heartless corporate vulture, and threatening to boycott the firm's mutual funds.

Victoria even went live on an afternoon lifestyle television broadcast, dabbing synthetic tears from her eyes with an embroidered handkerchief. ""She was so cruel to my boy,"" Victoria sobbed, leaning heavily on the host's arm while a soft-focus studio light highlighted her powdered wrinkles. ""She told him he was worthless every single day. And when I couldn't afford my heart medication because she canceled my insurance, she just laughed at me over the phone. I only wanted to protect my son from her violent temper.""

Watching the screen in Sarah's high-rise office, I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. It was breathtaking how effortlessly they turned reality on its head. Victoria had never worked a day in her life, lived in a four-million-dollar suburban estate that I had paid off, and spent more on vintage champagne every month than an average family earned in two years. Yet here she was, playing the martyr for millions of sympathetic viewers.

""We have to issue a statement immediately, David,"" I said, pacing across the carpet. ""We have the bank receipts! We have the records showing I paid off her mortgage, covered her luxury car leases, and paid for her cosmetic surgeries!""

""No, Emma, that's exactly what they want you to do,"" Sarah intervened, holding up a hand to stop me. ""If you come out fighting with personal receipts right now, it turns into a messy 'he said, she said' celebrity divorce spectacle. The public loves a villain, and Ethan gave them a wealthy, successful corporate woman to hate. If we fight them in the court of public opinion with defensive arguments, we lose. We have to hit them where they can't recover: with immutable forensic evidence of criminal conspiracy.""

""What are you proposing?"" David asked, crossing his arms and studying Sarah's face.

""Ethan forgot one crucial detail when he uploaded those forged documents to the online gossip outlets,"" Sarah smiled coldly, pulling a black flash drive from her pocket. ""He used a modified company template that was decommissioned by Emma's investment firm eighteen months ago. The digital metadata embedded in the PDFs contains a unique cryptographic watermark tied to an IP address registered to a luxury hotel suite at the Drake Hotel. And guess who checked into the presidential suite of the Drake three hours ago under an alias?""

I looked at Sarah, my eyes narrowing. ""Victoria.""

""Ethan is hiding out somewhere in the city, but Victoria is at the Drake, sitting on top of the laptop Ethan used to generate the forged documents,"" Sarah said, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet triumph. ""She's using the hotel's high-speed commercial network to coordinate the media interviews and transfer Ethan's remaining personal accounts. The Chicago police have an active arrest warrant for Ethan for the break-in, but with the metadata proof, we can secure an immediate federal search warrant for that hotel suite for interstate financial fraud and identity theft.""

""Then let's stop playing defense,"" I said, grabbing my coat from the back of the leather chair. ""Call the federal prosecutor. It's time to pay Victoria a personal visit.""
