Chapter 9 - The Day in Federal Court

The final judicial reckoning took place six months later in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The courtroom was packed with journalists, former business partners, and curious onlookers eager to witness the sentencing of two prominent figures from the Atlanta real estate elite.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Grandma Evelyn and Malcolm. I was dressed in a tailored navy blue suit that Grandma had insisted on buying for me. Sitting at the defense table in bright orange correctional jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound in heavy iron chains, were Arthur Cross and Logan Vance.
Six months in the federal detention center had stripped away every shred of Arthur's former vanity. His hair had turned completely snow-white, his shoulders were permanently stooped, and his hollow, sunken eyes stared blankly at the polished wooden table. Logan looked equally broken, his arrogant swagger replaced by the nervous, twitching demeanor of a cornered animal.
Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense jurist known for his zero-tolerance policy on white-collar predatory crimes, adjusted his reading glasses and looked down from the elevated bench with unmasked disdain.
""Arthur Cross and Logan Vance,"" Judge Harrison began, his deep voice carrying through the silent courtroom like rolling thunder. ""In my thirty years on the federal bench, I have rarely encountered a case of financial predation so utterly devoid of human decency. You did not merely exploit financial loopholes or defraud abstract banking institutions. You systematically, deliberately, and maliciously targeted your own flesh and blood.""
Judge Harrison turned his piercing gaze directly onto my father. ""Arthur Cross, you used your position as a father and a fiduciary trustee to strip your son of his legal inheritance, forge his identity to absorb millions of dollars in toxic commercial debt, and intentionally abandoned him to homelessness and destitution. You treated your own child as an expendable human shield to finance your lavish lifestyle and social vanity.""
Arthur bowed his head, a single, pathetic tear tracking down his weathered cheek.
""Pursuant to the federal sentencing guidelines and the terms of your guilty pleas,"" Judge Harrison declared, ""it is the judgment of this court that Arthur Cross be remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a period of fourteen years, without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay three million two hundred thousand dollars in direct criminal restitution to Zaden Cross.""
The gavel slammed down with a resounding boom that echoed through the courtroom like a gunshot.
""As to Logan Vance,"" the judge continued, ""for your central role in executing the fraudulent notarizations, laundering corporate assets, and facilitating interstate bank fraud, you are sentenced to nine years in federal custody, accompanied by full asset forfeiture and permanent disbarment from any commercial financial transactions.""

Again, the gavel cracked down.
Deputies stepped forward, lifting both men by their arms to lead them out through the heavy security doors leading to the holding cells. As Arthur was turned toward the exit, he looked back over his shoulder, his eyes locking onto mine for the last time. He opened his mouth, perhaps seeking one final plea for mercy, but the words withered on his lips. I didn't look away. I held his gaze with calm, unshakeable composure until the heavy steel doors swung shut behind him, closing that dark chapter of my life forever.
