Chapter 7 - The Arrest at the Country Club

By Saturday afternoon, the legal storm that had been brewing over the Cross family reached hurricane force. Malcolm had spent four relentless hours coordinating with federal prosecutors and state investigators in downtown Atlanta, handing over the authenticated audio files, forensic financial reconstructions, and Sarah Higgins’ sworn affidavit. Because the fraud crossed state lines and involved multiple federally insured banking institutions, the Federal Bureau of Investigation had assumed primary jurisdiction.
Grandma Evelyn insisted that we drive into the city to witness the closing chapter of Arthur Cross’s empire of deceit. We sat in the back of Malcolm’s town car, parked across the street from the grand entrance of the prestigious Peachtree Valley Country Club. It was one o'clock—the peak of the club’s traditional post-Thanksgiving weekend luncheon. The expansive parking lot was packed with luxury European sedans, and high-society patrons dressed in designer sportswear strolled through the manicured rose gardens.
Inside the dining room, Arthur Cross was attempting to hold court, desperately trying to project an aura of unbroken wealth and influence to reassure his remaining business associates. But the curtain was about to fall.
Three unmarked black Chevrolet Suburbans pulled into the country club driveway, their flashing blue and red grille lights slicing through the afternoon glare. Following closely behind were two marked Fulton County Sheriff vehicles. Six federal agents wearing dark windbreakers with golden FBI letters emblazoned across the back stepped out, accompanied by four uniformed deputies.
""Shall we observe, Zaden?"" Grandma Evelyn asked gently, touching my arm. ""You spent eight months hiding in the shadows of society. It is time for you to stand in the light while the guilty are dragged into the dark.""
We stepped out of the vehicle and walked onto the stone terrace overlooking the country club’s main dining patio. Through the tall glass French doors, the entire scene unfolded like a staged theatrical tragedy.
Arthur was standing near the head of a banquet table, holding a glass of vintage champagne, laughing loudly with two prominent local developers. Suddenly, the double doors burst open. Lead Special Agent Marcus Miller marched into the dining room, his badge held high in his left hand, an arrest warrant in his right.
""Arthur Cross!"" Agent Miller’s voice boomed across the crowded room, instantly silencing the murmur of polite conversation and the clinking of fine silverware. ""Put the glass down and place your hands behind your back!""
Arthur’s face morphed from arrogant confidence into sheer, wild-eyed panic. The champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering across the polished hardwood floor, splashing vintage wine over his tailored Italian trousers. ""What is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am? I am a founding board member of this establishment!""
""You are under arrest pursuant to a federal indictment charging you with eighteen counts of bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, and interstate transport of stolen property,"" Agent Miller stated with cold, unyielding authority.
Two uniformed deputies stepped forward, grabbed Arthur by the arms, and forced him facedown over the white linen table, knocking over crystal centerpieces and bread baskets. The sound of metal handcuffs ratcheting tightly around his wrists echoed through the cavernous dining hall.
Socialites gasped in horror, covering their mouths with silk napkins, while several prominent businessmen hastily backed away from the table, wanting nothing to do with the disgraced patriarch.
At that exact moment, Logan Vance was spotted attempting to slip out the side exit leading toward the tennis courts. But two federal agents stepped from behind the hedges, intercepting him instantly. Within seconds, Logan was shoved against the brick wall, cuffed, and relieved of his designer wallet and luxury watch.
As the agents paraded Arthur through the front lobby toward the waiting patrol cars, Arthur looked up and saw me standing on the terrace beside Grandma Evelyn.

""Zaden!"" Arthur screamed, his voice breaking into a ragged, desperate wail. ""Tell them it was a misunderstanding! I'm your father! You owe me everything! You can't let them take me away!""
I looked down at the man who had abandoned me to freeze in a car while he paraded around in stolen luxury. ""You didn't give me everything, Arthur. You took everything from me. And now, the law is taking it all back.""
