Chapter 4 - The Mansion's Secrets

The sheriff deputies handed Malcolm the newly re-keyed brass master locks and gave me a respectful nod before their cruisers rolled away into the Georgia night. The heavy front doors clicked shut, sealing Grandma Evelyn, Malcolm, and me inside the vast, cavernous silence of the lakefront estate.
I stood in the grand foyer, staring up in absolute disbelief. A two-story vaulted ceiling crowned by exposed timber beams arched over a living room dominated by floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the moonlit waters of Lake Oconee. An enormous stone fireplace reached toward the roofline, flanked by custom mahogany built-in bookshelves. The floors were wide-plank distressed oak, warm and immaculate under the recessed lighting.
""This was meant to be your sanctuary, Zaden,"" Grandma Evelyn said, her voice echoing softly through the immense space. ""When you graduated university with honors, your grandfather had already drawn up the architectural plans. He wanted you to have a place where you could build your design studio, live with dignity, and never be beholden to your father's ruthless demands.""
I walked slowly across the living room, touching the rough, cool stone of the fireplace mantle. ""Belle lived here like royalty while I counted nickels to buy expired bread at gas stations.""
""Not just Belle,"" Malcolm interjected, opening his laptop on the kitchen island made of solid white quartz. ""Look at these corporate utility registrations. Cross Horizon Enterprises didn't just use this property as a residential vacation home for Logan's parents. They used the address as the primary physical headquarters for a network of three shell companies.""
""What kind of companies?"" I asked, walking over to inspect the screen.
""Short-term vacation subleasing, private equity consulting, and vehicle asset leasing,"" Malcolm explained, his fingers dancing across the keyboard. ""Arthur and Logan took out luxury vehicle loans in your name. We’re talking two Range Rovers, an electric Porsche, and a twenty-six-foot wakeboard boat currently docked at the private slip out back. All registered under your Social Security number, with the monthly payments being funneled through your hijacked bank accounts.""
A cold shudder ran through me. ""How did they even get past credit verifications without my signature?""
""Your father kept your original birth certificate, your original Social Security card, and an outdated passport in the family safe at the main house,"" Malcolm answered grimly. ""In the modern financial system, when an identity thief possesses full documentary provenance and controls the physical mailing address, bypassing electronic security protocols is child's play. Especially when your father used a corrupt notary public within Logan’s brokerage firm.""
""Who was the notary?"" Grandma Evelyn asked sharply, her eyes narrowing.
""A woman named Sarah Higgins,"" Malcolm replied. ""Logan’s executive vice president and junior business partner. According to state licensing records, Ms. Higgins stamped twelve distinct property transfer deeds, power-of-attorney authorizations, and commercial loan applications over the last twenty-four months. All bearing forged signatures purporting to be Zaden Cross.""
""Then she is an accomplice to a felony,"" Grandma Evelyn declared, turning to Malcolm. ""Can we freeze their operational accounts tonight?""
""The emergency injunction granted by Judge Harrison has already placed an administrative freeze on every corporate banking account associated with Cross Horizon Enterprises, Arthur Cross, and Logan Vance,"" Malcolm said with a grim smile. ""As of eight o'clock this evening, their credit cards are declining, their wire transfers are blocked, and their automatic payment gateways have been completely shut down.""
Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a cheap, prepaid flip phone with only twelve minutes of talk time left on its monthly plan. The cracked screen displayed an incoming call from an unknown number.
I pressed the call button and held the plastic receiver to my ear. ""Hello?""
""Zaden! You miserable, spiteful little bastard!"" my father's voice screamed through the tiny speaker, laced with unhinged panic and alcohol. ""Every single corporate card was declined at dinner! The country club just revoked our line of credit! Belle’s bank account is completely locked down! Did your grandmother put you up to this? Call that lawyer off right now, or so help me God, I will disown you completely and make sure you never see a dime of family money!""
I took a deep, steady breath, looking out over the calm, dark surface of the lake, feeling the solid wood floors beneath my feet.
May you like
""Dad,"" I said calmly, ""you already disowned me when you let me sleep in a car for eight months while you stole everything I owned. And as for family money? Grandma and Malcolm showed me the books. You don't have any money left. It's all mine. See you in court on Monday.""
I ended the call, removed the flimsy plastic battery cover, and snapped the cheap SIM card in half.
