Chapter 6 - The Turncoat Sister

Belle collapsed onto one of the leather armchairs in the living room, weeping hysterically into her manicured hands. Behind her, Sarah Higgins stood near the entryway, clutching her leather portfolio against her chest as if it were a shield against an oncoming bullet. Her hands were shaking so violently that the metal zippers on her bag chattered together.
""Belle,"" I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of the meek compliance they had beaten into me for years. ""You sat at our dining room table yesterday and watched me explain how I was sleeping in a freezing car. You watched our father call me a failure, and you didn't say a single word. You let your in-laws live in my house for three years while I couldn't afford medicine when I had pneumonia last winter. Why on earth should I lift a single finger to help you now?""
""Because we're blood!"" she wailed, looking up at me with red, swollen eyes. ""Dad told me you had signed a private settlement before you left! He told me you received five hundred thousand dollars in cash and blew it all on gambling and bad investments! He swore you were lying about being homeless just to extort more money from the family!""
""And you believed that?"" Grandma Evelyn interjected, her walking stick striking the hardwood floor with a sharp, resounding crack. ""You never called him? You never visited his rundown apartment before he was evicted? You never once asked to see the canceled checks? No, Belle. You didn't care whether he was starving in the gutter or thriving in a penthouse, as long as Logan's parents had a luxury lake house to flaunt to their socialite friends and your country club dues were paid on time.""
Sarah Higgins took a tentative step forward, clearing her throat with a weak, squeaking sound. ""Mr. Cross... Mrs. Cross... my name is Sarah Higgins. I... I came here today voluntarily because I want to cooperate with your legal counsel.""
Malcolm turned toward her, his eyes sharp as scalpels. ""Ms. Higgins, as the notary of record on multiple fraudulent conveyances involving millions of dollars in real property and corporate debt, you are facing twenty to thirty years in a federal penitentiary for wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny conspiracy. What possible incentive do we have to offer you anything?""
Sarah quickly unzipped her portfolio, pulling out a thick sheaf of printed electronic communications, encrypted text message transcripts, and signed company ledger entries. ""Because Arthur and Logan made me do it under duress, and I kept the receipts. I kept audio recordings of every single closed-door meeting where they planned this entire operation.""
The room went dead silent. Even Belle stopped her theatrical sobbing, her eyes widening in horror as she stared at her husband's junior partner. ""Sarah... what did you do?""
""I protected myself, Belle!"" Sarah shouted back, tears of sheer panic spilling down her cheeks. ""Logan told me that if I didn't notarize Zaden’s signature on the secondary mortgage, he would fire me, revoke my equity shares, and ruin my career in commercial real estate! He said Zaden was a phantom who would never come back! But Arthur was the real architect. Arthur supplied the stolen birth certificate. Arthur supplied the fake identification documents. Arthur even hired an actor to stand outside the bank drive-through window during the initial verification audit!""
Malcolm walked over, took the portfolio from Sarah's trembling hands, and swiftly flipped through the authenticated transcripts. A slow, triumphant smile spread across his weathered face. ""Audio recordings of Arthur Cross explicitly instructing you to forge Zaden’s signature on the lake house deed?""
""Yes,"" Sarah whispered, nodding frantically. ""Three distinct recordings. Including one from two weeks ago, where Arthur instructed Logan to accelerate the offshore wire transfers because Evelyn was asking uncomfortable questions about Zaden’s whereabouts.""
""Malcolm,"" Grandma Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the tension like a razor. ""Dial Assistant United States Attorney Vance Richardson immediately. Tell him we have the missing linchpin for his racketeering indictment.""

Belle shrieked, falling to her knees on the rug. ""Zaden, please! If Dad goes to federal prison, the family will be destroyed! The shame... the scandal... we’ll lose everything!""
I looked down at my sister, feeling neither anger nor pity—only the absolute, liberating clarity of total emotional detachment. ""You didn't care about destroying a family when you stole my life, Belle. The only thing you're mourning right now is the lifestyle you bought with stolen money.""
